The new album Beyond the Gates, by the Sicilian band Crimson Wind, is the perfect proof that you cannot buy class! Even in a popular genre like power metal, inflated by several and frequent releases, there are those moments in which you can discover a work so intense and inspired where class and techniques are expressed in a very clear way. As a further evidence of what just written, it should not surprise the fact that their sophomore work, following the previous “Last Poetry Line”, has been published through Underground Symphony, a label that managed during the years to promote Italian and foreigner metal giants such as Labyrinth and Fabio Lione!
The band, made up by Guido Macaione (vocals), Giuseppe Taormina and Enrico Macaione (guitars), Andrea Amata (main composer, keyboards), Niki Zummo (bass) and Claudio Florio (also with Acacia and Trinakrius, drums) pulled out of its hat a magnificent album, opened by the evocative instrumental ORCHID and that includes the mini-concept “Black Swan” whose content shall be disclosed by Crimson Wind themselves in an interesting interview that Forge of Steel shall soon publish (spoiler alert!).
Black Swan is split in three exciting parts, different from each other from a musical standpoint. First is entitled BLACK SWAN and it is a power song showing elements that are able to create strong feelings and it really amazes for its rhythmical changes. Second THE REVELATION (BLACK SWAN PART II) shows a less power approach but still able to go through different styles that are clearly demonstrating band’s ability to tell a story of uncommon emotional level. WHITE SWAN (BLACK SWAN PART III) comes full circle with a sound even more evocative.
Power metal tracks like INCOMPLETE and CRADLE OF INSANITY attracts attention (even if wasn’t really necessary) on Guido’s vocal skills and on the whole band’s skilfulness, with refrains that strike hard for their originality, novelty and immediacy. EYES of ACRJIONDA has a more metal feeling in which Andrea’s keyboards are in great evidence.
WHIILN is, in my opinion, the most evocative song of Beyond the Gates in which shivering medieval atmospheres, made by the keyboards together with bagpipes, are interchanged with a typical power punctuated by vocal lines perfectly composed (listening is believing). EXODUS lasts in mind for its slower rhythm, pounding and captivating, whose melody bring us in a total new dimension… Beyond the Gates.
Not exaggerating at all I can say that Crimson Wind are, and will be, one of the high standing bands in the Italian power metal genre. Premises are really good and Beyond the Gates is their pass for the Metal Olympus! Majestic!

Il nuovo Beyond the Gates dei siciliani Crimson Wind è l'esatta dimostrazione che la classe non è acqua! Anche in un genere come il power metal dove le uscite discografiche sono molteplici e ravvicinate, quando ci si trova di fronte ad un lavoro così intenso ed ispirato si nota come la classe stessa emerga in maniera spontanea e cristallina. A testimonianza della bontà di quanto appena scritto non stupisce il fatto che il successore di “Last Poetry Line” venga pubblicato attraverso la Underground Symphony, label che ha avuto il merito nel corso degli anni di lanciare giganti del metal italiano quali Labyrinth e Fabio Lione!
La band, formata da Guido Macaione alla voce, Giuseppe Taormina e Enrico Macaione alle chitarre, Andrea Amata (principale compositore) alle tastiere, Niki Zummo al basso e Claudio Florio (Acacia, Trinakrius) alla batteria, tira fuori dal cilindro un’opera di qualità eccelsa introdotta dalla suggestiva strumentale ORCHID ed in cui è inserito il mini concept “Black Swan” il cui contenuto verrà svelato degli stessi Crimson Wind nel corso dell’intervista che presto pubblicheremo.
Black Swan è suddiviso in tre entusiasmanti parti musicalmente molto diverse l’una dall’altra. La prima intitolata proprio BLACK SWAN, una power song contenente elementi di forte teatralità che incanta tra i suoi diversi cambi di ritmo. La seconda THE REVELATION (BLACK SWAN PART II) presenta un mood meno power ma capace di attraversare diversi stili in cui è chiaro come la band stia raccontando una storia di rara suggestività. WHITE SWAN (BLACK SWAN PART III) chiude il cerchio con un sound per certi versi ancora più teatrale ed evocativo.
Tracce power metal quali INCOMPLETE e CRADLE OF INSANITY mettono in mostra (se mai ce ne fosse bisogno) le qualità vocali di Guido e la preparazione tecnica della band in generale, con refrain che colpiscono per originalità, freschezza e immediatezza. EYES OF ACRJIONDA ha un feeling più metal dove spicca anche il lavoro alle tastiere di Andrea.
WHIILN è a mio parere la traccia più suggestiva di “Beyond the Gates” in cui atmosfere medievali da brividi create con tastiere e cornamusa lasciano spazio ad un power scandito da linee vocali ancora una volta indovinate (ascoltare per credere). EXODUS rimane invece impressa per il suo ritmo lento, cadenzato e affascinante dove la melodia in essa contenuta ci trasporta come in un’altra dimensione... Beyond the Gates.
Non credo di esagerare scrivendo che i Crimson Wind siano e lo saranno ancora di più una delle band di spicco del power metal italico. I presupposti ci sono tutti e Beyond the Gates è il loro lascia passare per l’olimpo della musica che noi tutti amiamo! Maestosi!
