Carcass are back! After 7 years from the last release, the British give an appetizer of their incoming new album with the EP Despicable. The mini-CD contains four new songs including Under the Scalpel Blade, already released as a single at the end of 2019. The line-up is made up of the indestructible duo Bill Steer (vocals and guitar) & Jeff Walker (vocals and bass) together with Daniel Wilding (drums since 2012) and Tom Draper (live guitar).
THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE begins immediately powerful making us realize that Carcass’ style has not changed in this timeframe, melodic death metal with raw and pounding riffs, without exceeding in too many technic exercises. The changes in the middle of the piece are really well executed and confirm the band among the few to carry on the old-school style. THE LONG AND WINDING BIER ROAD starts with a bang too, the work of the guitars is clearer in this song which is more technical and melodic than the previous one and with a purer death vocal style. Towards the end of the track, the alternation between the verses and the guitar sweep-picking is particularly inspired.
UNDER THE SCALPEL BLADE explodes with blind fury alternating then more rhythmic moments and it stylistically places itself halfway between the first two songs of this EP. In the second half of the song, more melodic parts bring the band closer to melodies heard in more recent bands inspired by Carcass themselves. More similar to the previous one, SLAUGHTERED IN SOHO doesn't add much to the rest of the work by keep on highlighting powerful and melodic guitar riffs.
This EP ultimately forewarns a job in pure Carcass style and remains quite predictable. We will have to wait for the album to see if the band has spent these 7 years repeating itself or if it will surprise us with something innovative.

I Carcass sono tornati! Dopo ben 7 anni dall’ultima uscita, gli inglesi danno un antipasto del loro prossimo album con l’EP Despicable. L’album contiene quattro nuovi brani tra i quali anche Under the Scalpel Blade, già pubblicata come singolo a fine 2019. La formazione è composta dagli inossidabili Bill Steer (voce e chitarra) e Jeff Walker (voce e basso) insieme con Daniel Wilding (batteria dal 2012) e Tom Draper (chitarra live).
THE LIVING DEAD AT THE MANCHESTER MORGUE parte subito forte facendoci notare che lo stile dei Carcass non è cambiato in questo tempo, death metal melodico con riff crudi e martellanti, senza eccedere in troppi tecnicismi. I cambi di passo a metà canzone sono davvero ben studiati e confermano la band tra le poche a portare avanti lo stile old school. Anche THE LONG AND WINDING BIER ROAD parte con il botto, il lavoro delle chitarre è più evidente in questa canzone che risulta più tecnica e melodica della precedente e con un cantato più puramente death. Verso la fine del brano particolarmente azzeccata l’alternanza tra le strofe e lo sweep-picking di chitarra.
UNDER THE SCALPEL BLADE esplode con violenza cieca alternando poi momenti più cadenzati e collocandosi stilisticamente a metà strada tra i primi due brani di questo EP. Nella seconda parte del brano, parti più melodiche avvicinano la band a melodie sentite in band più recenti ispirate a loro volta dagli stessi Carcass. Più simile alla precedente, SLAUGHTERED IN SOHO non aggiunge molto al resto del lavoro mettendo ancora in evidenza riff di chitarra potenti e melodici.
Questo EP in definitiva preannuncia un lavoro in puro stile Carcass risultando abbastanza prevedibile. Bisognerà aspettare l’album per capire se la band ha passato questi 7 anni a ripetere se stessa o se ci stupirà con qualcosa di innovativo.
