Let's start directly from the conclusion... Nemesis, Skeletoon's latest effort, is probably the best power metal album of 2020. After three other discs produced from 2016 to today and many live shows, the band confirms that it has reached a truly enviable artistic and scenic maturity. Their live stages are a real bombshell, with Tomi jumping off the stage romping with the audience, and giving everyone 110% of their energy and talent, like real nerd superheroes! Surely one of the strong points of the album is that of being able to transport this energy from the stage to the physical support.
Album has been recorded and produced at Domination Studios by Tomi Fooler and Simone Mularoni, a guarantee of extreme quality and professionalism. The band sees among its ranks, in addition to the mentioned vocalist, Andrea Cappellari (lead guitar), Davide “Lord Dave” Piletto (guitar), Henry "Sydoz" Sidoti (drums) and Jack Stiaccini (bass). Together with the five heroes, several guest stars appear on the album: Alessandro Conti (Trick or Treat, Twilight Force), Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum), Bill Hudson (NorthTale, ex UDO), Giacomo Voli (Rhapsody of Fire), Roberto de Micheli (Rhapsody of Fire) and Alessio Lucatti for keyboard arrangements.
Soon after the intro PRELUDE: FALLING GALAXIES the first song BRIGHTER THAN 1000 SUNS explodes like a supernova thanks to Tomi's voice, immediately outlining what will be the musical features of the work. Powerful double-bass blast beats, power / speed guitar riffs and the singer's incredible high vocals immediately immerse us in the acquaintance of the superheroes and their battle against evil, inviting us to be part of the battle against evil in our minds. A happy metal bridge launches Tomi's voice even higher during the chorus which is immediate and engaging. The rhythm doesn't seem to slow down in the following WILL YOU SAVE US ALL? which sees the participation of Alessandro "Alle" Conti in a song that in my opinion is among the best ones of the album as originality of the guitar arrangements above all. It is commendable to see how, perhaps incited by his own friend, Tomi tries to surpass himself in the high notes of the refrain.
Register changes abruptly with the title track NEMESIS, lower, darker arrangements, vocals that almost recall a modern industrial / alternative influence to give voice to the great enemy of the title that promises fun and money in exchange for total surrender. Skeletoon move away from the power speed of the rest of the record even in the choruses with a rougher and heavier Tomi performance. The subsequent STARSEEKER, in which the keyboards played by Alessio Lucatti bring in mind the symphonic style of bands like Stratovarius. The refrain is particularly intense, followed by a beautiful guitar solo by Andrea who shows all his skills, and which is followed by Alessio, in the best duelling tradition. COLD THE NIGHT is a mid-tempo / power ballad in which the versatility of Tomi's voice is enhanced in all its range. The exciting atmosphere is also rendered here by a skilful base of keyboard and guitar, the protagonist of a slower, more intense, and melodic solo.
It’s again time for Speed Power with FOLLOW ME HOME. Furious shredding, incredible solos, continuous blast beats and choruses to sing out loud and to return to jump after the greater "tranquility" of the previous songs. No doubts that this is one of the tracks that will best perform live. Powerful rides in WAKE UP THE FIRE, a song in which Bill Hudson's style contributes and in which guitar and keyboard duet heavily. IL TRAMONTO DELLE ERE is the first Italian song made by the band; it starts with a beautiful piano intro and then flows into the melodic power guitar phrasing accompanied by the double bass drum on which Tomi's voice is then grafted, finally in his mother tongue, always on very high tones unattainable for mere mortals. Already experienced by other bands, the Italian performs very well, and I hope it does not remain an isolated case in the Skeletoon’s discography.
ARCANA OPERA exhibits the class of the song's guests including Simone Mularoni, Giacomo Voli and Roberto de Micheli. The happy nerd metal played by our guys remains devastatingly powerful. In the second part of the song the keyboards slow down the rhythm creating a precious sound-track fresco before starting again with heavy riffs and arrangements that again take up a more symphonic metal style on which a passionate guitar solo (by Roberto?) shines bright before the final verses. THE NERDMETAL SUPERHEROES is the anthemic song dedicated to everyday heroes, those who don't need a cloak. Musically, the predominant theme of the album continues as before, and it ends with choral arrangements and guitar solos that once again highlight the class achieved by the whole band. The last song is a successful cover of CARRY ON by Angra.
If it were produced by a foreign band, we all would call it a masterpiece. The truth is that Skeletoon have created an excellent album and have shown, with all their works, to be able to vary their own style, marking the fact that they can be counted among the best Power / Happy metal bands on the world scene.

Partiamo subito dalla fine… Nemesis, ultima fatica degli Skeletoon, è probabilmente il miglior album power metal del 2020. Forte di altri tre dischi prodotti dal 2016 ad oggi e tanti live, la band conferma di aver raggiunto una maturità artistica e scenica davvero invidiabile. I loro concerti sono una vera bomba, con Tomi che salta giù dal palco scatenandosi tra e con il pubblico, e dando tutti il 110% della propria energia e talento, come dei veri nerd superheroes! Ed uno dei punti forti del disco è sicuramente quello di essere riusciti a trasportare questa energia dal palco al supporto fisico.
L’album è stato registrato e prodotto pressi i Domination Studios da Tomi Fooler e da Simone Mularoni, garanzia di estrema qualità e professionalità. La band ha tra i suoi ranghi, oltre al già citato vocalist, Andrea Cappellari (chitarra solista), Davide “Lord Dave” Piletto (chitarra), Henry "Sydoz" Sidoti (batteria) e Jack Stiaccini (basso). Tempo della intro PRELUDE: FALLING GALAXIES ed il primo brano BRIGHTER THAN 1000 SUNS esplode come una supernova grazie alla voce di Tomi, delineando subito quelle che saranno le caratteristiche musicali del lavoro. Potenti blast beat di doppia cassa, riff power/speed di chitarra e gli incredibili acuti del cantante ci immergono subito nella conoscenza dei superheroes e della loro battaglia contro il male invitandoci a far parte della battaglia contro il male nelle nostre menti. Un bridge di happy metal lancia la voce di Tomi ancora più in alto durante il ritornello che risulta immediato e coinvolgente. Il ritmo non accenna a placarsi nella successiva WILL YOU SAVE US ALL? che vede la partecipazione di Alessandro “Alle” Conti in un brano che a mio parere risulta tra i più riusciti dell’album come originalità degli arrangiamenti di chitarra in primis. Lodevole vedere come, spronato forse dall’amico, Tomi provi a superare sé stesso negli acuti del ritornello.
Si cambia decisamente registro con la title-track NEMESIS, arrangiamenti più bassi, oscuri, un cantato che richiama quasi un moderno industrial/alternative per dare voce al grande nemico del titolo che promette divertimenti e ricchezze in cambio di una resa totale. Gli Skeletoon si allontanano dal power speed del resto del disco anche nei ritornelli con un cantato di Tomi più ruvido ed heavy. Ricorda molto lo stile degli Stratovarius la successiva STARSEEKER in cui sono particolarmente evidenti le tastiere suonate da Alessio Lucatti. Particolarmente intenso il ritornello a cui poi segue un bell’assolo di chitarra di Andrea che ne mostra tutta la bravura ed a cui segue, nella migliore tradizione duellistica, quello di Alessio. COLD THE NIGHT è una mid-tempo/power ballad in cui la versatilità della voce di Tomi si esalta in tutta la sua estensione. L’emozionante atmosfera è resa anche qui da una sapiente base di tastiera e chitarra, protagonista di un assolo più lento, intenso e melodico.
Ritorna lo Speed Power con FOLLOW ME HOME, shredding furioso, assoli da paura, blast beats come se piovesse e ritornelli da cantare a squarciagola per ritornare a saltare dopo la maggiore “tranquillità” delle canzoni precedenti. Sicuramente questo è uno di quei pezzi che meglio renderà in sede live. Potenti cavalcate in WAKE UP THE FIRE, canzone in cui contribuisce lo stile di Bill Hudson ed in cui chitarra e tastiera duettano piacevolmente. IL TRAMONTO DELLE ERE è la prima canzone in italiano per la band, parte con una bellissima intro di pianoforte per poi sfociare nei fraseggi di chitarra power melodico accompagnati dalla doppia cassa su cui poi si innesta la voce di Tomi, finalmente in lingua madre, sempre su toni molto alti ed irraggiungibili per i comuni mortali. Già sperimentato da altre band, l’italiano rende benissimo e spero che non resti un caso isolato nella discografia degli Skeletoon.
ARCANA OPERA mette in mostra la classe degli ospiti della canzone tra cui figurano lo stesso Simone Mularoni, Giacomo Voli e Roberto de Micheli. L’happy nerd metal suonato dai nostri resta di una potenza devastante. Nella seconda parte della canzone le tastiere rallentano il ritmo creando un prezioso affresco da sound-track prima di ripartire con dei riff pesanti e arrangiamenti che riprendono nuovamente uno stile più symphonic metal su cui risplende un appassionato assolo di chitarra (di Roberto?) prima delle strofe finali. THE NERDMETAL SUPERHEROES è la canzone anthemica dedicata agli eroi di tutti i giorni, quelli che non hanno bisogno di mantello. Musicalmente prosegue e chiude il tema predominante dell’album con arrangiamenti corali e assoli di chitarra che mettono ancora una volta in luce la classe raggiunta dalla band tutta. Chiude l’album una riuscita cover di CARRY ON degli Angra.
Se fosse prodotto da una band straniera si griderebbe al capolavoro. La verità è che gli Skeletoon hanno creato un ottimo album e hanno dimostrato, con gli ultimi lavori, di essere in grado di variare il proprio stile rimarcando il fatto di poter essere iscritti tra le migliori band Power/Happy metal del panorama mondiale.
