Utgard is the latest effort of the Norse Enslaved, sons of the first wave of Norwegian black metal and progenitors together with other select few of the Black Flame of the second wave, however capable of bringing evolutions in the sound and in the themes shared by the entire Circle of that time. The successor of "E", published in 2017, appears very inspired, the prog influences are getting stronger, but the pagan atmospheres are untouched, and the composition is always suggestive and capable of transmitting the glacial cold of the great north.
Intro FIRES IN THE DARK is sung in its first part in Old Norse and, through drum rolls, introduces the unique black voice that alternates with clean in an evolution that becomes clear from the very first piece of Utgard. JETTEGRYTA is instead the typical black metal track of the opera and it is really evident! Guys, you feel that true black metal is for a few select bands and Enslaved are among them.
SEQUENCE has a catchier mood where clean and growl alternate again on a more prog-rock sound while in HOMEBOUND, black outbursts alternate with more cadenced rhythms with a symbiosis that only the great bands can create; really dizzying the refrain in clean vocals and the guitar solos that convey anxiety and anguish with a cold Viking coldness.
UTGARDR is the evocative and goose bumping Norse intro of URJOTUN, the first single extracted and the most experimental piece of the entire album where electronics come to the foreground and where the greatest merit by Enslaved is to keep intact their attitude even with sound elements far from what has always been proposed. FLIGHT OF THOUGHT AND MEMORY is a fantastic piece and shows what Enslaved are today, a band capable of forging its own genre through a mix of styles and influences, the unique black vocals giving way to clean ones on slower rhythms and then going back again to extreme sounds even more typically metal, while the speech in the final part is really suggestive.
STORMS OF UTGARD begins with the gentle sound of the waves and the wind that crashes on the Norwegian cliffs and then develops on an electro-rock-metal territory with exciting changes of vocal styles while the final DISTANT SEASONS starts with an acoustic approach that is then transformed into modern rock and where the clan vocals seem alternatively disturbing, persuasive, reassuring in a whirlwind of emotions that only great artists can give.
There are no other terms like that of masterpiece to define "Utgard", black metal has never been so avant-garde, and nothing more felt can be said to Enslaved except that "THANK YOU”!!!

Utgard è la nuova fatica dei norreni Enslaved, figli della prima ondata black metal norvegese e capostipiti assieme ad altri pochi eletti della fiamma nera della seconda ondata capace, comunque, di portare evoluzioni nel sound e nelle tematiche più o meno condivise dall’intero cerchio di allora. Il successore di “E” del 2017 appare molto ispirato, le influenze prog si fanno sempre più forti ma le atmosfere pagane non vengono assolutamente scalfite ed il tutto rimane sempre suggestivo e capace di trasmettere il freddo glaciale del grande nord.
L’intro FIRES IN THE DARK cantata nella sua prima parte in norreno attraverso rulli di tamburi introduce l’inconfondibile voce black che si alterna al clean in un’evoluzione che diventa evidente già dal primo pezzo di Utgard. JETTEGRYTA è invece la traccia black per eccellenza dell’opera e si sente… ragazzi si sente che il vero black metal è per poche selezionate band e gli Enslaved sono tra di esse.
SEQUENCE ha un mood più catchy dove ancora clean e growl si avvicendano su un sound più prog-rock mentre in HOMEBOUND sfuriate black si alternano a ritmi più cadenzati con una simbiosi che solo le grandi band sanno mettere a terra; da capogiro il refrain in clean vocals e gli assoli di chitarra che trasmettono ansia e angoscia con una vichinga gelida freddezza.
UTGARDR è l’evocativa norrena e da pelledoca intro di URJOTUN primo singolo estratto e pezzo più sperimentale dell’intero album dove l’elettronica passa in primo piano e dove il maggior merito da parte degli Enslaved è quello di mantenere intatta la propria attitudine anche con elementi sonori distanti da quello che è stato sempre proposto. FLIGHT OF THOUGHT AND MEMORY è un pezzo fantastico e testimonia cosa sono oggi gli Enslaved, una band capace di forgiare un proprio genere attraverso un mix di stili e influenze, in particolare delle inconfondibili black vocals lasciano spazio a quelle clean su ritmi più lenti per poi tornare ancora su sonorità estreme a tratti anche più tipicamente metal, suggestivo invece il parlato nella parte conclusiva.
STORMS OF UTGARD ha inizio attraverso il rumore dolce delle onde e del vento che si infrange sulle scogliere norvegesi per poi svilupparsi su un territorio elettro-rock-metal con rocamboleschi cambi di stili vocali mentre la conclusiva DISTANT SEASONS contiene in principio un approccio acustico che si trasforma ancora in modern rock e dove le clean vocals sembrano a tratti disturbanti, suadenti, rassicuranti in un turbinio di emozioni che solo i grandi artisti sanno regalare.
Non ci sono altri termini come quello di capolavoro per definire “Utgard”, il black metal non è mai stato così all’avanguardia e nient’altro possiamo dire agli Enslaved se non “GRAZIE”!!!!
