What links the farthest northern Europe and the deepest Italian south? Probably the extreme boundary makes in both case a fertile terrain for the extreme music. Today I had the pleasure to listen to the latest split EP by two new and intriguing Black Metal bands from Sicily, Lich and Ossario. New bands as just said, but the bands’ members are active since years in the local scene with several other bands and projects, not really newbies!
Ossario is a brand-new reality created by the tireless mind of Totò Schizoid and that had its debut in June 2020 with the first EP. Together with him, playing guitars and bass, line-up includes also Anamnesi on drums and Krost von Barbarie on vocals. Lich is a Death/Black metal band active since 2012 with a full-length released in 2018 titled “Cryptic Stench”. Band is made by Morbid Bodysnatcher on guitars, Damien Thorne on vocals and bass and Animal Profanator on drums.
REVENGE OF THE DEAD starts with a violent mix of Thrash and Technical Death. Vocals are cemeterial and the whole song is able to transmit a sense of dramatic and pure evilness thanks also to growls and screams that create the feeling as if the dead are coming back from their graves. Slowing down of the song in the second part creates a funereal even more dramatic tone. NIGHTMARE is following the same stylistic path of the previous song set in a Thrash/Death arrangement that in the final part introduced by a satanic laugh, reminds of the better Slayer.
SADOMARTYRS shows typical black/thrash riffs in a dark arrangement created by endless blast beats and deep growling vocals that see the participation of Diego DoUrden (from Brazilian Death/Black Mystifier) as guest artist. An intro from the cult Italian horror movie “Paura nella Città dei Morti Viventi” (known worldwide as “City of the Living Dead”) starts the next A GRAVE WITHIN THE MIND, dedicated to the director Lucio Fulci, more thrash oriented with Death insert. Krost vocal style is less guttural resulting in a particularly good match with the song’ style. Technical Death influences are present in the guitar’s arrangement and especially in the solo by Necrosplatter (Daemonokrat, Death Metal from Sicily as well), the second guest of the EP.
Both bands are playing a really inspired old school Death/Thrash Metal showing that the Mediterranean scene is really alive and well, lacking maybe a bit of unity to raise at a higher level.

Cosa lega il più lontano nord Europa e il più profondo sud italiano? Probabilmente il confine estremo crea, in entrambi i casi, terreno fertile per la musica estrema. Oggi ho avuto il piacere di ascoltare l'ultimo Split EP di due nuove e intriganti band black metal siciliane, Lich e Ossario. Band nuove come appena detto, ma i membri delle band sono attivi da anni nella scena locale con molte altre band e progetti, per nulla alle prime armi!
Ossario è una nuovissima realtà creata dalla mente instancabile di Totò Schizoid e che ha debuttato nel giugno 2020 con il loro primo EP. Insieme a lui, alla chitarra e basso, la formazione comprende anche Anamnesi alla batteria e Krost von Barbarie alla voce. Lich è una band Death / Black metal attiva dal 2012 con un full-length pubblicato nel 2018 intitolato "Cryptic Stench". La band è composta da Morbid Bodysnatcher alle chitarre, Damien Thorne alla voce e al basso e Animal Profanator alla batteria.
REVENGE OF THE DEAD inizia con un violento mix di Thrash e Technical Death. Le voci sono cimiteriali e l'intera canzone trasmette un senso di drammatica e pura malvagità grazie anche a ringhi e urla che creano la sensazione di trovarci di fronte ai morti che tornano dalle loro tombe. Il rallentamento della canzone nella seconda parte crea un tono funereo ancora più drammatico. NIGHTMARE segue lo stesso percorso stilistico del brano precedente su di un arrangiamento Thrash / Death che nella parte finale, introdotto da una risata satanica, ricorda i migliori Slayer.
SADOMARTYRS mostra i tipici riff black / thrash in un oscuro arrangiamento creato da continui blast beats e voci ringhiose profonde che vedono la partecipazione di Diego DoUrden (dai brasiliani Mystifier) come artista ospite. Una intro dal film cult horror italiano “Paura nella Città dei Morti Viventi” (conosciuta all’estero come “City of the Living Dead”) dà inizio al successivo A GRAVE WITHIN THE MIND, dedicato al regista Lucio Fulci, più orientata al thrash con inserti Death. Lo stile vocale di Krost è meno gutturale e si adatta in maniera particolarmente riuscita con lo stile della canzone. Influenze del Death più tecnico sono presenti nell'arrangiamento della chitarra e soprattutto nell'assolo suonato da Necrosplatter (dai Daemonokrat, Death Metal siculo), secondo ospite dell'EP.
Entrambe le band suonano un old school Death / Thrash Metal davvero ispirato e mostrano che la scena mediterranea è veramente viva e vegeta, manca forse un po’ di unità per elevarsi ad un livello superiore.
