Acacia is an “historical” name in the Sicilian and national metal scene. Born in 1990 in Palermo, after a series of legendary demos comes, in 1996, their debut album “Deeper Secrets”, an intense work ahead of its time compared to the metal scene of that time. From that moment a silence that was broken only after 23 years! Resurrection was in fact released on 6 December 2019, with a renewed line-up that includes, in addition to the mastermind Martino Lo Cascio (guitar), also Gandolfo Ferro (vocals), Simone Campione (guitar), Massimo Provenzano (bass) and Claudio Florio (drums).
Acacia's style is a Progressive/Heavy influenced by various musical references, while from the point of view of the lyrics, the album is a very intimate concept about human feelings. Mainly negative feelings: anger, pain, abandonment, and fear, all linked by the theme of the search for an inner strength, the recovery and rebirth as the title of the album recalls. The whole work is the result of an excellent production that can be felt in the arrangements and in the general enhancement of the technical qualities of all the components.
The Incipit OBSESSION is a delicate and melodic voice / guitar preamble that immediately introduces the dark discomfort that will then be explored in its various aspects; a strings sound gives the track a very expressive mood. LIGHT IN SHADOWS starts strong with a more typically Heavy/Prog style where the excellent guitar arrangements are evident and in which Gandolfo immediately shows his singing skills supported by perfect arrangements during the chorus; his high notes introduce the first guitar heavy solo of the album. CHAINS OF MEMORY, musically more progressive metal, is characterized by the great ability to recreate intense and dreamlike atmospheres, a trail that continues with moments of uncommon suggestion in THE AGE OF GLORY, in which Martin Luther King exhibits his very current “Dream”.
ALONE and THE MAN are instead two ballads having the merit of highlighting the great vocal technique through warm and exciting tones culminating in refrains truly inspired and supported by an exquisite arrangement, in particular the one present in the latter, has the merit of closing the album on the sweet notes pronounced by a female voice sublimely accompanied by Simone's guitar. Progressive metal rhythms and arrangements are coming back in REVELATION DAY, a song that is among the highest points of the album, as they are in GONE AWAY, which after a very heavy intro slows down thanks to the very persuasive and versatile voice of Gandolfo and where the excellent guitar solo recalls neoclassical influences (I wouldn't be surprised if one of Simone's influences is a certain Michael Romeo).
MY DARK SIDE contains the catchiest chorus and overall it seems to be the most "commercial" song of the work, but beware... already from the second listening certain alternative nuances emerge to indicate a work that should not be taken for granted and that is certainly meditated over time, making this piece among the best of the lot, that is class... SEASONS END partly follows the path traced by “My Dark Side” but develops in a different way passing from a mid-tempo to more rhythmic tones and riffs, very, very suggestive.
The influences of Acacia are ultimately traced back to American prog-metal, but we are only talking about influences, these in fact are mixed, developed, reworked and used as a starting point for achieving a style that has the merit of creating a magic atmosphere that very few bands of today's scene are able to achieve.
"Resurrection" highlights compositional class, sublime technique, great inspiration and has the merit of increasing the regret of not having had with us in the "last" 23 years a band that could have churned out many masterpieces such is the musical knowledge those boys have. The road is marked we are waiting for you with the next masterpiece!

Acacia è un nome storico nella scena metal siciliana e nazionale. Nati nel lontano 1990 a Palermo, dopo una serie di leggendari demo arriva nel 1996 il debutto discografico con Deeper Secrets, album intenso e avanti nei tempi rispetto alla scena metal dell’epoca. Da quel momento un silenzio che viene spezzato solo dopo 23 anni! Resurrection è infatti stato pubblicato il 6 Dicembre 2019, con una line-up rinnovata che include, oltre al mastermind Martino Lo Cascio (chitarra) anche Gandolfo Ferro (voce), Simone Campione (chitarra), Massimo Provenzano (basso) e Claudio Florio (batteria).
Lo stile degli Acacia è un Progressive/Heavy in cui si innestano varie influenze musicali mentre dal punto di vista dei testi, l’album è un concept, molto intimista, sui sentimenti umani. Sentimenti principalmente negativi: rabbia, dolore, abbandono e paura, ma legati dal tema della ricerca della forza interiore, della riscossa e della rinascita come ricorda il titolo stesso del disco. L’intero lavoro è figlio di un’ottima produzione che si sente negli arrangiamenti e nella valorizzazione generale delle qualità tecniche di tutti i componenti.
l’Incipit OBSESSION è un delicato e melodico preambolo di voce/chitarra che introduce sin da subito l’oscuro sconforto che verrà poi esplorato nei suoi vari aspetti; un suono d’archi dona alla traccia un mood molto espressivo. Parte forte LIGHT IN SHADOWS con uno stile più tipicamente Heavy/Prog dove sono evidenti gli ottimi arrangiamenti di chitarra e in cui Gandolfo da subito prova delle sue capacità canore supportate da ottimi arrangiamenti durante il ritornello, i suoi acuti introducono il primo heavy assolo di chitarra dell’album. CHAINS OF MEMORY musicalmente più progressive metal si caratterizza per la grande capacità nel ricreare atmosfere intense e oniriche, discorso che continua con attimi di rara suggestione in THE AGE OF GLORY, in cui Martin Luther King espone il suo attualissimo “Dream”.
ALONE e THE MAN sono invece due ballad che hanno il pregio di evidenziare la grande tecnica vocale attraverso toni caldi ed emozionanti culminanti in refrain davvero ispirati e supportati da un arrangiamento squisito, in particolare quello presente nella seconda ha il merito di chiudere l’album sulle soavi note pronunciate da una voce femminile sublimemente accompagnata dalla chitarra di Simone. Ritmi ed arrangiamenti progressive metal si ripropongono sempre efficaci in REVELATION DAY, canzone che risulta tra i punti più alti dell’album come in GONE AWAY, che dopo un intro molto heavy rallenta grazie alla voce di Gandolfo molto suadente e versatile e dove è eccellente l’assolo di chitarra che richiama influenze neoclassiche (non mi stupirei se tra le influenze di Simone ci fosse un certo Michael Romeo).
MY DARK SIDE contiene il ritornello più catchy e nel complesso sembra essere la canzone più “commerciale” dell’intero lavoro, ma attenzione... già dal secondo ascolto emergono certe sfumature alternative ad indicare un lavoro comunque non scontato e sicuramente meditato nel tempo che rende il pezzo tra i migliori del lotto, la classe… SEASONS END segue in parte il percorso tracciato da “My Dark Side” ma si sviluppa in maniera diversa passando da un mid-tempo a toni e riff più cadenzati, molto ma molto suggestivi.
Le influenze degli Acacia risultano in definitiva riconducibili al prog-metal statunitense, ma si parla solo di influenze, queste infatti vengono mescolate, sviluppate, rielaborate e utilizzate come punto di partenza per il raggiungimento di uno stile che ha il merito di creare un’atmosfera magica che veramente poche band del panorama odierno sono in grado di realizzare.
“Resurrection” evidenzia classe compositiva, tecnica sublime, grande inspirazione ed ha il merito di accrescere il rammarico di non avere avuto con noi in questi “ultimi” 23 anni una band che avrebbe potuto sfornare tantissimi capolavori tanta è la conoscenza musicale di cui dispongono questi ragazzi. La strada è segnata vi aspettiamo con il prossimo masterpiece!
