Ars Metal Mentis is the highly anticipated return of the 360 degrees artist Mario "The Black" Di Donato and one of the most important releases in the Italian doom scene in this 2020. The work is spectacular since the cover that coincides with a suggestive fresco painted by "The Black" himself, while musically, in addition to the great inspiration with which the album has been written, we note how the production is more professional than in the past and this contributes to making the sound proposed by the living legend even more intense and darker.
PRAESAGIUM, through an evocative organ, introduces the dooming MARIUS DONATI where the usual vocal performance in Latin increases even more the spectacle of the Italian artist. ARS METAL MENTIS, title track of the album, has a refrain that remains impressed from the very first listen as well as pressing and memorable guitar riffs. F.P.TOSTI after an apparently calm incipit, leads to a mighty Heavy Doom Sound in which the whole band is like a Swiss watch, an approach that continues in MUSEUM, track whose rhythm becomes faster and closer to Heavy Metal than to Doom but the result is anyway amazing, especially the guitars arrangement in the final part. LUPI FORTES coincides with the most evocative (in the opinion of the writer) 4 minutes of the entire album, the Latin texts convey darkness, discomfort and anguish and it seems to be pronounced almost by a prophet, while MALA TEMPORA contains the most angry and oppressive musical aspect in an atmosphere that takes on the colour of pitch. DECAMERON is the fastest song of "Ars Metal Mentis", an Rock n 'Roll like execution speed that does not impact the characteristic sound of the band while rather highlighting its class even in these environment; still a really suggestive refrain. CASTRUM PESCULUM, IMMOTA MANET and CERBERO maintain the very high-quality standards present in the whole work, where the Heavy/Doom proposed by the Maestro takes back to the biggest names on the current and past world scene. The outro ATERNUM is also suggestive and mystical, where the inspired presence of Tony Pagliuca (Le Orme) should be mentioned, as well as the intro PRAESAGIUM which gives a particular touch of darkness to the suite.
Ars Metal Mentis is a candidate as the definitive manifesto of the sound of “The Black”. It is an album that enhances what already been done in the past and that gives to old and new fans a unique artist able to amaze even today. An absolute confirmation and at the same time a continuous revelation. A must to have!!!

Ars Metal Mentis è il nuovo attesissimo ritorno dell’artista a tutto tondo Mario “The Black” Di Donato e una delle uscite di maggior rilievo nel panorama doom italiano nel 2020. Il lavoro si presenta spettacolare sin dalla copertina coincidente con un suggestivo affresco dello stesso “The Black” mentre musicalmente oltre alla grande ispirazione con cui il tutto è stato scritto notiamo come la produzione sia più “professionale” rispetto a quanto fatto in passato e ciò contribuisce a rendere il sound proposto dalla leggenda vivente ancora più intenso e oscuro.
PRAESAGIUM attraverso un evocativo organo introduce alla doomeggiante MARIUS DONATI dove la consueta performance vocale in latino accresce ancor di più la spettacolarità tutta dell’artista abruzzese. ARS METAL MENTIS title track dell’album ha al suo interno un refrain che rimane impresso sin dal primo ascolto oltre a degli incalzanti e memorabili riff di chitarra. F.P.TOSTI dopo un apparentemente calmo incipit sfocia in un possente Heavy Doom Sound in cui il lavoro della band nel suo complesso funziona come un orologio svizzero, approccio che prosegue in MUSEUM traccia il cui ritmo però diventa più veloce e più vicino all’heavy metal che al Doom ma il risultato è sempre stupefacente, da sballo le chitarre nella parte finale. LUPI FORTES coincide con i 4 minuti (a parere di chi scrive) più evocativi dell’intero album, i testi in latino trasmettono oscurità, disagio e angoscia e sembrano essere pronunciati quasi da un profeta mentre MALA TEMPORA contiene musicalmente l’aspetto più rabbioso ed oppressivo in un atmosfera che assume il colore della pece. DECAMERON è il pezzo più speed di “Ars Metal Mentis”, una velocità d’esecuzione quasi Rock n’ Roll che non snatura il caratteristico sound della band e che anzi evidenzia la preparazione della stessa anche in questi frangenti, suggestivo ancora il refrain. CASTRUM PESCULUM, IMMOTA MANET e CERBERO mantengono gli altissimi standard qualitativi presenti in tutto il lavoro dove l’heavy-doom proposto dal maestro riporta ai più grandi nomi della scena mondiale odierna e passata. Suggestiva e mistica anche l’outro ATERNUM dove è da menzionare l’ispirata presenza di Tony Pagliuca (Le Orme) così come per l’intro PRAESAGIUM che da un particolare tocco di oscurità alla suite.
Ars Metal Mentis si candida come manifesto definitivo del sound di “The Black”, un album che accresce quanto di grande fatto già in passato e consegna a vecchi e nuovi fans un artista unico ed in grado di stupire ancora oggi. Una conferma assoluta e nello stesso tempo una continua rivelazione. Da avere!!!
