There was a time when Symphonic Black Metal was branded as the Posers’ extreme genre and its followers were accused of outraging the black verb of True Norwegian Black Metal. Today thanks to bands such as Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Dissection, Cradle of Filth and Limbonic Art, we can talk about two distinct worlds, one of them (the symphonic) took inspiration only from the original Black Metal, expanding its musical concept. Perdition, Svartghast’ debut album, is a great work of Symphonic Black Metal that can easily be compared to the masterpieces of the genre for atmosphere, magnificence, precision, intensity, and malice worthy of the true heirs of the aforementioned bands.
Azazel and Choronzon make things clear right away! The first track and titletrack PERDITION opens the macabre dances through an orchestral intro followed by a mid-tempo and then a compact black metal. INTO THE VOID is rich, full and regal in sound as much as evocative in its growl singing, the symphony in the central part, broken by vocalizations, results in an out-of-the-ordinary impact and atmosphere while BEYOND THE VEIL OF MIST is the fastest and most extreme track of all Perdition, here the symphonic mood is given little space (only as a background in some situations) and the result is thrilling!
THE BLACK WRAITH ASCENDS is the impactful and suggestive intro of ON DARK WINGS THEY SOAR shocking piece that, with the following THE PRESAGE OF ETERNAL FIRE, fully specifies the genre! Who wants to find out today what Symphonic Black Metal is must listen and study these 10 minutes to be applauded tirelessly.
THE FALL OF THE FIRST with its orchestral approach, the piano as the protagonist and the persuasive female hisses, introduces an enveloping guitar solo and for the first time in Perdition the clean vocals (very fitting in this moment).
The absolute pearl of Perdition is the final LUCIFERIAN DAWN. I believe that no one has ever been able to make the fall of Lucifer into music in a better and more appropriate way; all the musical components typical of the sound proposed by the duo lend their contribution in making the imaginary reality in a whirlwind of emotions that only the elect can read and feel.
Svartghast’s debut it’s something that makes an impression, together with desire and hunger to hear more from these new masters who, from past experiences in other bands, have been able to create something unique with the great merit of wanting to bring back a genre to the glories which I adore and which I hope will acquire new life blood. NEW MASTERS!

Esisteva un tempo in cui il Symphonic Black Metal veniva tacciato come il genere estremo dei “Poser” e i suoi adepti accusati di oltraggiare il vero e nero verbo del True Norvegian Black Metal. Oggi soprattutto grazie a band quali Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Dissection, Cradle of Filth e Limbonic Art si parla di due distinti mondi, uno dei quali (quello sinfonico) ha preso solo spunto dal primo black metal ampliandone il concetto musicale. Perdition, disco d’esordio degli Svartghast è una grande opera di Black Metal Sinfonico che può tranquillamente essere accostata ai capolavori del genere per atmosfera, magnificenza, precisione, intensità, e malignità degna dei veri eredi delle band sopra citate.
Azazel e Choronzon mettono subito in chiaro le cose! Il primo pezzo e titletrack PERDITION attraverso un’intro orchestrale seguita da un mid tempo e poi da un black metal serrato apre le danze macabre. INTO THE VOID è corposa, piena e regale nel sound quanto evocativa nel suo cantato growl, la sinfonia nella parte centrale spezzata dalle vocalizzazioni risulta di un impatto e di un’atmosfera fuori dal comune mentre BEYOND THE VEIL OF MIST è la traccia più veloce e estrema di tutto Perdition, qui al mood sinfonico viene dato poco spazio (solo come sottofondo in alcuni frangenti) ed il risultato è da brividi!
THE BLACK WRAITH ASCENDS è l’intro di assoluto impatto e suggestività di ON DARK WINGS THEY SOAR pezzo sconvolgente che con la successiva THE PRESAGE OF ETERNAL FIRE identifica in pieno il genere! Chi vuole scoprire oggi cosa è il Symphonic Black Metal deve ascoltare e studiare questi 10 minuti circa da applausi a scena aperta.
THE FALL OF THE FIRST con il suo approccio orchestrale, il piano come protagonista ed i suadenti sibili femminili introduce un assolo di chitarra avvolgente e per la prima volta in Perdition le clean vocals (azzeccatissime in questo frangente).
L’assoluta perla di Perdition è la conclusiva LUCIFERIAN DAWN. Ritengo che nessuno abbia mai saputo rendere in musica la caduta di Lucifero in modo migliore e più appropriato, tutte le componenti musicali tipiche del sound proposto dal duo prestano il loro contributo nel rendere l’immaginario realtà in un turbinio di emozioni che solo gli eletti possono leggere e provare.
Il primo lavoro degli Svartghast è qualcosa che lascia il segno, voglia e fame di ascoltare ancora tanto da questi nuovi maestri che da esperienze passate in altre band più o meno importanti hanno saputo creare qualcosa di unico con il grande merito voler riportare ai fasti un genere che io adoro e che spero acquisisca nuova linfa vitale.
