Stilema’s history dates to 2004 when, with the moniker Stilema XXI, they were formed as an acoustic folk band recording a 6-tracks demo followed, in 2009, by an EP more folk rock-oriented. After a few years off they returned in 2017 with the EP Ithaka and finally with Utopia, full-length debut of 2020. The current line-up is composed by Gianni Izzo (vocals, acoustic guitars), Federico Mari (guitars, vocals), Francesco “Frenk” Pastore (bass, keyboards), Domenico Pastore (drums) and Wiktoria Denkiewicz (violin, vocals).
Stilema propose a Folk Metal sung in Italian that presents typical features of the genre such as the predominance of violin and acoustic sounds combined with Power and sometimes Black arrangements which manage to create an original and unordinary style with meditated texts, stepping in mysticism, myth, literature, and criticism of today's society. IL VOLO ETERNO begins just like that, power folk with violin and percussion on which are introduced typically heavy / power riffs, alternating with medieval style arrangements. Interesting vocal gatherings that, on the predominant male clean singing, see a second voice in growl and the accompaniment of the female voice, more lyrical. Compact and Hard riffs alternate with symphonic creations of violin and percussion, bringing into the second part of the song with a pure heavy guitar solo that introduces clean / growl choruses and the crescendo of the final verses, that are among the highest points of the album. TRA LEGGENDE E REALTA’ does not differ much from the previous one, while with OPHELIA, which starts slowly with dark acoustic guitar arpeggios and female lyric singing, the rhythm slows down passing to a more surreal atmosphere created by exquisite flute melodies that pay full homage to tragic story of the Shakespearean character. The growl singing is more present here than elsewhere together with typically Black constructions to increase the dramatic tone of the piece.
MONDI PARALLELI is a more rhythmic Heavy song; the rhythm abruptly slows down in the middle of the piece moving on to dramatic tones and then speeds again up with a beautiful orchestral arrangement guided by the sound of the violins. The song then goes even faster towards the end with tempo changes, solos always exquisite and introducing the bagpipes to recall Celtic influences from the band's early period. DA QUI NON SI PASSERA’ is a power folk song that evokes (also in terms of themes) the fellow countrymen Folkstone. ANACRUSIS is a short instrumental interlude that introduces the next, and my favourite piece, UTOPIA. Song starts with very Heavy riffs, tending to Power/Speed with Black veins again, but it doesn't stop there! The versatility and compositional technique of the band create a varied and unexpected piece, in which Arabian rhythms and orchestrations peek out between medieval melodies, where the growl is followed by atmospheres emerged from "One Thousand and One Nights", beautifully conveyed by Wiktoria’s voice, and which then closes, with power / medieval riffs, the longest song of the album but richer, at the same time, in ideas and which demonstrates the skills of the whole band. Album is closed by ARMONIE, a very emotional and intense ballad of piano, voice, and strings.
Utopia is an interesting and varying album, which expertly mixes different influences creating a pleasant style made even more captivating by using the Italian language. As a debut, it is an excellent business card and Stilema will surely have remarkable feedbacks!

La storia degli Stilema risale al 2004 quando, con il moniker Stilema XXI, si formarono come folk band Acustica registrando un demo di 6 tracce seguito poi, nel 2009, da un EP più folk rock-oriented. Dopo qualche anno di pausa sono poi tornati nel 2017 con l’EP Ithaka ed infine Utopia, debut full-length del 2020. La line-up attuale è composta da Gianni Izzo (voce, chitarre acustiche), Federico Mari (chitarre, voce), Francesco “Frenk” Pastore (basso, tastiere), Domenico Pastore (batteria) e Wiktoria Denkiewicz (violino, voce).
Gli Stilema propongono un Folk Metal cantato in italiano che presenta tratti tipici del genere come la predominanza di violino e suoni acustici accostati ad arrangiamenti più Power ed a tratti Black che riescono nell’intento di creare uno stile originale e mai banale con testi impegnati, intrisi di misticismo, mito, letteratura e critica alla società attuale. IL VOLO ETERNO inizia proprio così, power folk con violino e percussioni su cui si innestano riffs tipicamente heavy/power alternati con arrangiamenti stile medievale. Interessanti gli incroci vocali che, sul predominante cantanto clean maschile, vedono una seconda voce in growl e l’accompagnamento della voce femminile, più lirica. Riff compatti e rocciosi si alternano alle creazioni sinfoniche di violino e percussioni arrivando poi nella seconda parte della canzone ad un assolo di chitarra di puro stampo heavy che introduce i cori clean/growl ed il crescendo delle strofe finali tra i punti più alti dell’album. TRA LEGGENDE E REALTA’ non si scosta molto dalla precedente, mentre con OPHELIA, che inizia lenta con oscuri arpeggi di chitarra acustica e cantato lirico femminile, il ritmo rallenta passando ad una atmosfera più surreale creata da soavi melodie di flauti che rendono pieno omaggio alla tragica storia del personaggio shakespeariano. Il cantato in growl è qui più presente che altrove insieme a costruzioni tipicamente Black ad aumentare il tono drammatico del pezzo.
MONDI PARALLELI è un Heavy a tratti più cadenzato; il ritmo rallenta bruscamente a metà del brano spostandosi su toni drammatici per poi ripartire con un bellissimo arrangiamento orchestrale guidato dal suono dei violini. La canzone accelera poi verso la fine con dei cambi di tempo e assoli sempre squisiti ed introducendo anche le cornamuse a richiamare influenze celtiche del primo periodo della band. DA QUI NON SI PASSERA’ è una canzone power folk che richiama molto (anche per tematiche) i connazionali Folkstone. ANACRUSIS è un breve intermezzo strumentale che introduce la successiva, e mio brano preferito, UTOPIA. La canzone inizia con riff molto pesanti, al limite del Power/Speed con venature ancora una volta Black, ma non si ferma solo a questo! La versatilità e tecnica compositiva della band creano un pezzo vario e che non ti aspetti, in cui tra melodie medievali fanno capolino ritmi arabeggianti ed orchestrazioni, dove il growl viene seguito da atmosfere uscite da “Le mille ed una notte”, resi magnificamente dalla voce di Wiktoria, e che chiude poi, con riff power/medievali, la canzone più lunga dell’album ma anche più ricca di spunti e che dimostra l’abilità tecnica di tutta la band. Chiude l’album ARMONIE, una ballad molto emozionale ed intensa di pianoforte, voce ed archi.
Utopia è un album interessante e vario, che miscela sapientemente influenze diverse creando uno stile piacevole reso ancor più accattivante dall’uso della lingua italiana. Come primo lavoro è un ottimo biglietto da visita e gli Stilema avranno sicuramente un notevole riscontro!
