I rarely came across a band that had the merit of impressing me (literally) only after 10 seconds of listening to their own music. Among these there are the Sicilians Haunted who, in 2018, released that masterpiece that answers to the name of Dayburner, that is a dark, occult album, steeped in esotericism and with a color blacker than the ace of spades. The band, back then formed by the "Black Queen" Cristina Chimirri on vocals, Francesco Bauso and Francesco Orlando on guitars, Frank Tudisco on bass and Dario Casabona on drums, gave birth to a viscerally monstrous creature that I think shall hardly be matched in the course of years in Italy.
Lyrics from the band deal with matters such as the occult, love, death and darkness, while the proposed sound follows at first the path traced by their first 2016 album "Haunted" but then it changes, becomes heavier, and even more oppressive like in the initial MOURNING SUN where an atmospheric intro accompanied and punctuated by organs explodes in a Stoner / Doom in which Cristina's voice hypnotizes, stuns, transports to another dimension. In WATERDAWN a subtle initial guitar melody seems to engrave the heaviness of the sound, but it is only an illusion because it is sucked into the whole Haunted’s dimension that embraces and devours all. The almost ten minutes pass fast without even realizing the duration, so much one is involved. Very suggestive the initial part of the title track DAYBURNER in which the singer’s voice is accompanied by a single acoustic guitar; the piece then settles on an ancestral Doom but what is striking is the symbiosis with which the band moves in pieces from the very long duration testifying to the great technical preparation and the important harmony that exists between the individual members, moreover the alchemy between the instrumental and vocal part of the track reaches trance levels like few other bands have the gift of being able to do.
COMMUNION is the almost ambient intro of ORPHIC, another masterpiece with its thirteen minutes of absolute and uncompromising Occult Stoner / Doom where at times the singing acquires the characteristics of a fascinating litany while the sound is even more obsessive. Sulphurous is the incipit of VESPERTINE, which this time introduces a Hard Rock that is only a forerunner to an almost Sabbathian sound, but now they are only juxtapositions that can be made between masters of the past and the Sicilians who have reached an identity of their own recognized not only within the national borders. Within the track, the vocals also seem to take sometimes on Arabic traits attributable to bewitching and seductive hisses.
NO CONNECTION WITH DUST is an intense instrumental that opens the doors to the grand finale of LUNAR GRAVE, an almost entirely instrumental piece that contains all Good and Dark (even if this time you can glimpse a glimmer of ... lunar light) that has been ever written by Haunted, a summa with an amazing result once again.
Haunted are tangible reality of today's Doom scene and their latest album stands out as one of the masterpieces of the genre, not only in Italy. Fascinated by their immense abilities and being privileged to publish a splendid interview on these pages, we cannot help but look forward to their next dark chapter.

Raramente mi sono imbattuto in una band che ha avuto il merito di folgorarmi (letteralmente) dopo 10 secondi d'ascolto di un proprio pezzo. Tra queste figurano i siciliani Haunted che nel 2018 hanno pubblicato quel capolavoro che risponde al nome di Dayburner ovvero un album oscuro, occulto, intriso di esoterismo e dal colore più nero di quello della pece. La band, allora formata dalla “Regina Nera” Cristina Chimirri alla voce, Francesco Bauso e Francesco Orlando alle chitarre, Frank Tudisco al basso e Dario Casabona dietro le pelli, ha dato vita ad una creatura visceralmente mostruosa che credo difficilmente avrà eguali nel corso degli anni in Italia.
I testi dalla band catanese trattano materie come l’occulto, l’amore, la morte e l’oscurità, mentre il sound proposto segue il percorso tracciato dal primo album del 2016 “Haunted” ma muta, si appesantisce, diventa ancora più oppressivo come nell’iniziale MOURNING SUN dove un intro atmosferica accompagnata e scandita da organi esplode in uno Stoner/Doom in cui la voce di Cristina ipnotizza, stordisce, trasporta in altra dimensione. In WATERDAWN una sottile melodia di chitarra iniziale sembra scalfire la pesantezza del sound ma è solo un’illusione perché la stessa viene risucchiata nel tutto della dimensione degli Haunted che abbraccia e divora. I quasi dieci minuti trascorrono senza rendersene conto tanto si è coinvolti. Molto suggestiva la parte iniziale della title track DAYBURNER in cui la voce della cantante è accompagnata da una sola chitarra acustica, il pezzo poi si assesta su un Doom ancora ancestrale ma quello che colpisce è la simbiosi con cui si muove la band in pezzi dalla lunghissima durata a testimonianza della grande preparazione tecnica e dell’importante affiatamento che c’è tra i singoli componenti, inoltre l’alchimia tra la parte strumentale e vocale del pezzo raggiunge livelli da trance come poche altre band hanno il dono di poter fare.
COMMUNION è l’intro quasi ambient di ORPHIC, altro pezzo capolavoro con i suoi tredici minuti di assoluto e intransigente Occult Stoner/Doom dove a tratti il cantato acquisisce le caratteristiche di un’affascinante litania mentre il sound risulta essere ancora più ossessivo. Sulfureo è l’incipit di VESPERTINE, che introduce questa volta un Hard Rock che fa solo da apripista ad un sound quasi Sabbathiano, ma ormai sono solo accostamenti che possono essere fatti tra grandi del passato e i siciliani che hanno raggiunto un’identità tutta loro riconosciuta non solo tra i patri confini. All’interno della traccia, le vocalità sembrano assumere inoltre tratti arabeggianti a volte riconducibili a sibili ammalianti e seducenti.
NO CONNECTION WITH DUST è l’intensa strumentale che apre le porte al gran finale di LUNAR GRAVE, pezzo quasi interamente strumentale che racchiude tutto quello che di buono e oscuro (anche se questa volta si intravede uno spiraglio di luce… lunare) abbiano scritto degli Haunted, una summa dal risultato ancora una volta stupefacente.
Gli Haunted sono ormai una realtà del panorama Doom odierno ed il loro ultimo disco si pone come uno dei capolavori del genere, non sono in Italia. Affascinati dalle loro immense capacità e onorati dal poter pubblicare su queste pagine anche una splendida intervista, non possiamo far altro che attendere con trepidazione il loro prossimo oscuro capitolo.
