Debut album for Last Century, band from Vicenza (Italy) founded in 2014 by the gathering of the two guitarists Roberto Biasin and Riccardo Signorini, soon joined by Giovanni Giustioli on drums. In 2016 they released their first single entitled "Call of War" and shortly after, with the addition of Luca Piccolo (bass), they released the first EP "Mandatory Disguise". In 2018, Riccardo leaves the band replaced by Gabriele Boccadamo and finally in October 2020 "A State Of Being Aware" is released for Maculata Anima Rec.
I do not like to start from not really positive aspects, but unfortunately the cover artwork doesn't look great as band's business card. Both the chromatic choice and the design itself (although interesting as a theme and linked to the lyrics of the album) certainly do not do justice to the whole work and affect its judgment. Moving on to the music, which is instead fully promoted, it has to be said that the album stays mainly on Technical Death / Thrash coordinates and what ultimately emerges is the high skill of the whole members, especially in creating arrangements that expertly mix Thrash riffs with Heavy and Melodic Death parts as in ETERNAL RETURN or in SLAVES OF TIME, the band's first single, which shows excellent guitar harmonization in the central part of the song and really interesting alternations in the final part. The sin of the song, which will also be found in ENEMY ZONE, is the clean singing on which Roberto seems not to be extremely comfortable, unlike the rest of the album where he unleashes an excellent growl reminiscent of Amon Amarth.
Songs like HUMANITY DECEPTION and BOUND TO LIES also feature alternations with slower and melodic moments spiced up with tempo changes, rhythmic riffs and excellent guitar solos that put, especially the latter, among the best pieces together with THE BLACK LODGE. Production and mixing certainly need to be improved, at certain moments the instruments overlap in a way that is perhaps a little too confusing and less clean than in the rest of the album. INTERLUDE is the first of the two instrumental pieces included in the album, an interlude in fact, which does not add anything noticeable unlike the subsequent JOURNEY INTO REGRETS. The song is quite long, nine and a half minutes, but keeps the attention high throughout its duration through a good dose of Melodic Heavy moments, as in the opening part, and the use of heavier riffs alternating with Technical Death and Thrash in the second part. Overall, it's another great piece that highlights the band's compositional and executive qualities. The work is presented from the point of view of the texts as a concept, linked by the theme of the condition of man to be mentally caged and conditioned by the system (hence the allegory of the mental labyrinth of the cover) waiting for his difficult taking of conscience hoped by the title.
A State of Being Aware is a good debut album that shows a high songwriting and executive capacity by all the members of the band, combined with limitations such as the presentation and a production to be improved which, entrusted to more expert hands, will allow to Last Century to make a decisive leap in quality with the next work.

Debut album per i vicentini Last Century, band fondata nel 2014 dall’incontro dei due chitarristi Roberto Biasin e Riccardo Signorini, raggiunti presto da Giovanni Giustioli alla batteria. Nel 2016 pubblicano il loro primo singolo dal titolo "Call Of War" e poco tempo dopo, con l’aggiunta di Luca Piccolo (basso), rilasciano il primo EP "Mandatory Disguise". Nel 2018, Riccardo lascia la band sostituito da Gabriele Boccadamo ed infine "A State Of Being Aware" viene pubblicato nell’ottobre 2020 per la Maculata Anima Rec.
Non mi piace partire da aspetti non propriamente positivi ma purtroppo l’artwork della copertina non si presenta benissimo come biglietto da visita della band. Sia la scelta cromatica che il disegno stesso (seppur interessante come tematica e legato ai testi dell’album) non rendono sicuramente giustizia al lavoro nel suo complesso e ne penalizzano il giudizio. Passando alla musica, che invece è pienamente promossa, l’album si muove principalmente su coordinate Technical Death/Thrash e quello che in definitiva si evince è una elevata capacità tecnica della band tutta, soprattutto nel creare arrangiamenti che sapientemente mescolano riff Thrash e parti Heavy e Melodic Death come in ETERNAL RETURN o in SLAVES OF TIME, primo singolo della band, che mostra delle ottime armonizzazioni di chitarra nella parte centrale del brano ed alternanze davvero interessanti nella parte finale. Pecca del brano, che si ritroverà anche in ENEMY ZONE, è il cantato clean su cui Roberto sembra non trovarsi molto a suo agio, al contrario del resto dell’album in cui sfodera un ottimo growl che ricorda gli Amon Amarth.
Brani come HUMANITY DECEPTION e BOUND TO LIES presentano anche alternanze con momenti più lenti e melodici conditi con cambi di tempo, riff cadenzati e ottimi assoli di chitarra che rendono in particolare il secondo tra i migliori pezzi del lotto come anche THE BLACK LODGE. Restano da migliorare sicuramente la produzione ed il mixaggio, in certi momenti gli strumenti si accavallano in maniera forse un po’ troppo confusa e meno pulita che nel resto dell’album. INTERLUDE è il primo dei due pezzi strumentali inclusi nell’album, un interludio appunto, che non aggiunge nulla di particolare a differenza del successivo JOURNEY INTO REGRETS. Il brano è abbastanza lungo, nove minuti e mezzo, ma tiene alta l’attenzione per tutta la sua durata tramite un buon dosaggio di momenti Melodic Heavy, come nella parte iniziale, e l’uso di riff più pesanti alternati ad arrangiamenti Technical Death e Thrash nella seconda parte. Complessivamente è un altro ottimo pezzo che mette in evidenza le qualità compositive ed esecutive della band. Il lavoro si presenta dal punto di vista dei testi come un concept, legato dal tema della condizione dell’uomo di essere mentalmente ingabbiato e condizionato dal sistema (da qui l’allegoria del labirinto mentale della cover) in attesa di una sua difficoltosa presa di coscienza auspicata dal titolo.
A State of Being Aware è un buon debut album che mostra una elevata capacità di songwriting ed esecutiva da parte di tutti i componenti della band, unita però a delle limitazioni quali la presentazione ed una produzione da migliorare che, affidate a mani più esperte, permetteranno ai Last Century di fare un deciso salto di qualità.
