What is art in music? An intense melody perhaps, a sensation, a memory captured through notes that wrap and manage to convey what the artist wants to express, or probably all those definitions put together. I believe that BEYOND THE SHORES, third album by Shores of Null from Rome, is proof of that. The full-length contains a unique 38-minutes piece (represented in video through a medium-length film of great suggestiveness and involvement) that addresses the theme of the dark, unknown and mysterious passage between life and death in which anguish, pain and affections are left behind.
Musically, the alternative progressive Gothic/Doom Metal on which the band’s style lies on evolves with respect to the previous works and it follows the various phases of the journey of which the artwork (splendid) is the Door while the exciting initial violin is the invitation to enter; the melody it creates (sublime) brings us in the different aspects of the work creating a hypnotizing narrative thread. The path of death and redemption is represented in different phases (according to my interpretation): the awareness in which the clean vocals tell the awareness of death and of what is being abandoned; the anger in which the growl screams and asks why all this happens (right to us); the rejection with a more speed sound and a mix between growl and clean vocals that also captures the vision of the eternal war between life and death, taking everything away, portraited through a fascinating melody and a still exciting singing; the discouragement and the sense of consolation for the possibility that all this pain can be rewarded, transformed into Music through a piano in the foreground, and a vocal style still of an incredible suggestiveness; the final abandonment that within the work embodies the most varied and complex part in which Speed, Doom and Gothic moments alternate worthy of the greatest masters such as My Dying Bride.
I believe that "Beyond the Shores" is the last-ditch effort of this 2020 that made us suffer so much in daily life and gave us so much in terms of music, a gigantic work full of pathos and capable of hypnotizing and exorcising the darkest thoughts through a genre that I tried to define before, but which is indefinable so great is its beauty.

Cos’è l’arte in musica? Forse una intensa melodia, una sensazione, un ricordo catturato attraverso note che avvolgono e che riescono a rendere ciò che l’artista vuole trasmettere o probabilmente l’insieme di esse. Credo che BEYOND THE SHORES, terzo album dei capitolini Shores of Null, sia la dimostrazione di quanto scritto. Il full length contiene un unico brano di 38 minuti (rappresentato in video attraverso un mediometraggio di grande suggestività e coinvolgimento) che affronta il tema del passaggio oscuro, sconosciuto e misterioso tra la vita e la morte in cui angoscia, dolore e affetti vengono lasciati alle spalle.
Musicalmente il gothic alternative progressive doom metal su cui si fonda il sound della band si evolve rispetto agli ultimi lavori e segue le varie fasi del viaggio di cui l’artwork (splendido) è la porta mentre l’emozionante violino iniziale ne è l’accesso principale; la melodia da esso creata (sublime) ci accompagnerà in diversi frangenti dell’opera creando un ipnotizzante filo conduttore. Il percorso di morte e redenzione viene rappresentato in diverse fasi (in base alla mia interpretazione): la presa di coscienza in cui le clean vocal raccontano la consapevolezza della morte sopraggiunta e di quello che si sta abbandonando; la rabbia in cui il growl grida e chiede il motivo per cui accade tutto questo (proprio a noi); il rifiuto con un sound più speed ed un mix tra growl e clean vocal che incamera anche la visione della eterna guerra tra vita e la morte che tutto porta via interpretata attraverso un’affascinante melodia ed un cantato ancora emozionante; lo sconforto e il senso di consolazione per la possibilità che tutto questo dolore possa essere ricompensato, tramutato in musica attraverso un pianoforte in primo piano ed un cantato ancora di una suggestività inaudita; l’abbandono finale che all’interno del lavoro incarna la parte più varia e complessa in cui si alternano momenti speed, doom e gothic degni dei più grandi maestri quali i My Dying Bride.
Credo che “Beyond the Shores” sia il colpo di coda di questo 2020 che tanto ci ha fatto soffrire nella vita quotidiana e tanto ci ha regalato in termini di musica, un’opera mastodontica carica di pathos e capace di ipnotizzare di esorcizzare i pensieri più oscuri attraverso un genere che prima ho cercato di definire ma che risulta indefinibile tanta è la sua bellezza.
