Juglans Regia’s history has nothing ordinary starting from the moniker itself which, in Latin, means “Royal Walnut”. The band was formed in 1992 when Massimiliano Dionigi (bass), Alessandro Parigi (vocals) and David Carretti (drums) formed Rising Fear, a Classic Heavy Metal band active until 1994. Since 1995, with the passage to lyrics in Italian, the combo moves to its current name by churning out three studio albums and appearing in several compilations and, after a break from 2009 to 2017, it reforms the line-up by producing the new EP "Memorie dal Presente" together with Antonello Collini (guitar) and Lapo Martini (keyboards).
The band presents itself as a champion of Rock / Metal with a touch of Prog, even if honestly this definition does not do entirely justice to the proposed genre, in which there is also the touch of Freddy Delirio, at whose studio the album has been registered. Immediately from the first song L'IMPERDONABILE, work shows a fine and melodic Hard Rock played with great technical mastery, enriched by the use of the 80s keyboard that gives the composition a Progressive touch that, without ever really taking over, accompanies and builds captivating arrangements alternating with solid Heavy guitar riffs that pave the way for Alessandro's singing. His style is, I believe, one of the most original things, in particular evidence since the first listening; staying away from the typical canons of Metal, what impresses is a vocal register with a melodic, varied, and emotional rendering, that are mainly typical elements of the Italian rock/pop musical school. Album then continues with MASCHERE, a varying song with a more Heavy/Prog beginning which then slows down becoming more rhythmic, showing tempo changes, and riffing at times perhaps a little excessive that end up overwhelming the vocal lines in one of the moments that perhaps could have been arranged differently.
The following track, PRIMO ISTINTO, begins as a very emotional ballad with a piano intro followed closely by the guitar and the rhythm section and then flows into a Heavy / Rock of exquisite workmanship garnished by splendid guitar arpeggios in which the voice creates captivating and harmonious melodies as in the catchy and inspired chorus. The guitar solo is also exceptionally beautiful, and further confirms the potential of the combo. The best song of the lot for sure! On the same coordinates also the final LE VIRGOLE DEL TEMPO, which shows a soul more inclined to Prog or in any case to certain New Wave sounds of past years and that creates, together with the previous one, an excellent “business card” for the next full-length.
A very pleasant discovery suggested to all those who want something that leaves the feeling of an original production but at the same time with a strong imprint of the sound of the golden years of Rock.

La storia degli Juglans Regia non ha nulla di banale a partire già dallo stesso moniker che in latino significa “Noce Reale”. La band nasce nel 1992 quando Massimiliano Dionigi (basso), Alessandro Parigi (voce) e David Carretti (batteria) formano i Rising Fear, gruppo di Classic Heavy Metal attivo fino al 1994. Dal 1995, con il passaggio al cantato in italiano, il gruppo passa al nome attuale sfornando tre studio album ed apparendo in numerose compilation e, dopo una pausa durata dal 2009 al 2017, si riforma producendo il nuovo EP “Memorie dal Presente” insieme ad Antonello Collini (chitarra) e Lapo Martini (tastiere).
La stessa band si presenta come fautrice di un Rock/Metal con un tocco di Prog anche se onestamente questa definizione non rende del tutto giustizia al genere proposto, in cui ha messo il suo tocco anche Freddy Delirio, presso il cui studio l’album è stato registrato. Già la prima canzone del lotto, L’IMPERDONABILE, mostra un pregevole Hard Rock suonato con grande padronanza tecnica, melodico ed impreziosito dall’uso della tastiera molto anni ’80 che dona alla composizione un tocco Prog che, senza prendere davvero mai il sopravvento, accompagna e costruisce arrangiamenti accattivanti alternati con solidi riff di chitarra Heavy che spianano la strada al cantato di Alessandro. Il suo stile è, a parere mio, una delle cose che risaltano originali ed in particolare evidenza fin dal primo ascolto del disco; restando lontani dai canoni tipici del Metal, ciò che impressiona è costituito da un registro vocale e da una resa melodica, varia ed emozionale, che sono elementi più tipici della scuola rock/leggera italiana. Il disco continua poi con MASCHERE, brano vario con un inizio più Heavy/Prog che poi rallenta diventando più cadenzato mostrando cambi di tempo e riffing a tratti forse un po’ eccessivi che finiscono per sovrastare le linee vocali in uno dei punti del disco che poteva forse essere arrangiato diversamente.
La successiva PRIMO ISTINTO inizia come una ballad molto emozionale con una intro di pianoforte seguita a ruota dalla chitarra e dalla sezione ritmica sfociando poi in un Heavy/Rock di pregevolissima fattura condito da splendidi arpeggi di chitarra in cui la voce crea delle melodie accattivanti ed armoniose come nel ritornello catchy ed azzeccato. Bellissimo anche l’assolo di chitarra che da ulteriore conferma della stoffa del combo. Sicuramente la migliore canzone del lotto! Sulle stesse coordinate anche la finale LE VIRGOLE DEL TEMPO, che mostra un’anima più incline al Prog o comunque a certe sonorità New Wave degli anni passati e crea, insieme alla precedente, un ottimo biglietto da visita in attesa del prossimo full-lenght del gruppo.
Una piacevolissima scoperta suggerita a tutti coloro che hanno voglia di qualcosa che lasci la sensazione di una produzione originale ma allo stesso tempo con una forte impronta di sonorità degli anni d’oro del Rock.
