Aquileia Mater Aeterna, first full length by the Friulian Gates Of Doom, is a concept that tells in music the epic history of the city of Aquileia in its period of maximum Roman splendour, through both great and difficult events such as that of the Antonine plague and of its fall under the blows of Attila, scourge of god. The proposed sound differs from the Death Metal of the debut EP and settles more on an Epic/Black/Death imbued with atmospheric shades that evoke the history of the city and in which I personally believe predominant the most blackened facets that make already Gates of Doom as an original and distinguishable band within the genre.
SULCUS PRIMIGENIUS/UNDER THE SIGN opens the story with a breath-taking intro and a captivating refrain that can be immediately memorized thanks to a sound closer to Viking metal. More wicked is the next SI VIS PACEM, PARA BELLUM with its primordial black metal, while I, THE EAGLE, THE STRENGTH, THE POWER is in my opinion a thrilling piece, so much is the variety of sounds and genres it contains and in which cadenced and fast rhythms narrate, invoke, shout Aquileia! THE GALENUS PLAGUE is still a pleasant Black Metal ride in which one takes a breath only through more metal interludes that enrich the piece. UNDER A TREACHEROUS DOMAIN contains a melody that takes and hypnotizes through sounds closer to classic Heavy, the vocal lines this time are less aggressive but evocative. Even more engaging is ATTILA, FLAGELLUM DEI, the most powerful growl ever accompanied by moments of musical extremism perfectly conveys the majesty of the moment told and, in the notes, you can hear and relive the history of Aquileia ... goosebumps. The title track AQUILEIA MATER AETERNA summarizes and re-proposes all the wonders expressed in this great work, the journey comes to an end, but the grandeur of the album will echo for a long time as the myth of the Roman city.
The first full-length of Gates of Doom is a record that excites, that assails you, that thrills, that evokes, narrates as few before have managed to do. A record that metal fans in general must have on their shelves and that we at Forge of Steel will have the luck to deepen thanks to an upcoming exciting interview ... Stay tuned!

Il primo full length dei friulani Gates Of Doom, Aquileia Mater Aeterna, è un concept che racconta in musica l’epopea della città di Aquileia nel suo periodo di massimo romano splendore attraversando momenti di grandiosità ma anche di difficoltà come come quello della peste antonina e della sua caduta sotto i colpi dell’Attila flagello di dio. Il sound proposto si discosta dal Death Metal dell’EP d’esordio e si assesta su un Epic/Black/Death intriso di tinte atmosferiche che bene rievocano la storia della città ed in cui personalmente ritengo predominanti le sfaccettature più blackened che rendono musicalmente i Gates of Doom originali e distinguibili già adesso all’interno del panorama di genere.
SULCUS PRIMIGENIUS/UNDER THE SIGN apre la storia con un’intro mozzafiato ed un refrain accattivante e da subito memorizzabile anche grazie ad un sound più vicino al Viking metal. Più cattiva è nel complesso SI VIS PACEM, PARA BELLUM con il suo primordiale black metal mentre I, THE EAGLE, THE STRENGTH, THE POWER è a parer mio un pezzo da brividi, tanta e la varietà di suoni e di generi in esso contenuti ed in cui ritmi cadenzati e veloci narrano, invocano, gridano Aquileia! THE GALENUS PLAGUE è ancora una cavalcata Black Metal d’autore nella quale si prende fiato solo attraverso degli intermezzi più metal che arricchiscono comunque il pezzo. UNDER A TREACHEROUS DOMAIN contiene una melodia che prende e ipnotizza attraverso sonorità più vicine all’heavy classico il cantato questa volta è meno aggressivo ma evocativo. Coinvolgente al massimo è ancora ATTILA, FLAGELLUM DEI, il growl più possente che mai accompagnato da momenti di estremismo musicale rende la maestosità del momento raccontato e nelle note suonate si può ascoltare e rivivere la storia di Aquileia... da pelle d’oca. La title track AQUILEIA MATER AETERNA riassume e ripropone tutte le meraviglie espresse in questa opera magna, il viaggio volge al termine ma la grandiosità dell’album riecheggerà per molto tempo come il mito della città romana.
Il primo lavoro su lunga durata dei Gates of Doom è un disco che appassiona, che ti assale, che emoziona, che rievoca, narra come pochi prima sono riusciti a fare. Un disco che gli appassionati del metal in generale devono avere nei loro scaffali e che noi di Forge of Steel avremo la fortuna di approfondire grazie ad una prossima entusiasmante intervista...
