I must admit with great sincerity that I approached Astralium only recently and in a random way, guided by Youtube’s suggestions... I have to say good suggestions (even if late compared to the release date), because they gave rise to a real love at first sight! The majesty of the band's symphonic arrangements, the beauty and grandeur of Roberta's voice and the strongly Power-oriented touch immediately bewitched me.
Band, founded in 2010 in Noto (Sicily) by Roberta and Giuseppe Pappalardo with the name of Black Roses, changes to current moniker in 2014 while starting, at the same time, the production of original music with the current line-up which includes in addition to Roberta (vocals and piano) and Giuseppe (bass), also Salvo Grasso (drums and vocals) and Emanuele Alessandro (guitars). In 2019 this Land of Eternal Dreams sees the light, a debut album that will surely be talked about for a very long time...
Album starts with REMEMBRANCE, an intro that immediately presents and enforces the strongly symphonic nature with beautiful orchestrations and choirs, and it continues immediately with THE JOURNEY, which adds solid Power / Symphonic riffs reminding the earliest Rhapsody, moving then on to highly inspired guitar phrases on which the first verse starts, immediately showing off Roberta's sweet and melodious voice. Singer demonstrates right away her excellent vocal preparation with a range that varies tones without ever overdoing it. Splendid keyboards accompany the guitar in the construction of the bridge that introduces the male narrative by the skilled Adam Cook. RISING WAVES FROM THE OCEAN begins with riffs and arrangements that are recalling Nightwish and that lead to a very catchy chorus. The song is varied, brief hints of oriental notes alternate with the hardest moments that introduce the male singing of the next guest Tommy Johansson (Sabaton, Majestica). The melodic guitar solo is exquisite and leads to the second part of the song which incorporates tones more tending to a Symphonic / Gothic Metal. The variation between the male and female voices continues in the subsequent MY LIFE IS MY ETERNITY which, after a keyboard and violin start, presents Power arrangements in the sharpen guitars and in a beautiful guitar solo performed by Stefano "Ghigas" Calvagno and accompanied by very inspired orchestrations. In the chorus the Arabic arrangements return briefly, present as a common thread in many of the songs. Epic choruses in a martial flavour refrain followed by an instrumental part still Heavy make the second part of the track very varied and exciting.
WHISPER IN THE SILENCE is undoubtedly one of the best songs of the work. Not only for the always splendid orchestrations and Power / Heavy arrangements but also for the way in which the legend of Alfeo and Arethusa is declaimed (figure of Greek mythology from which the “Fonte Aretusa” takes its name, a body of water on the island of Ortigia in the oldest part of the Sicilian city of Siracusa). The rhythm alternates more cadenced moments and sometimes obscure arrangements as in the second part of the song, where a virtuoso guitar solo by Andrea Martongelli (Arthemis, Ellefson) preludes to Roberta's voice interweaving with another truly exceptional guest, Jo Lombardo, singer of the Sicilian band Ancestral. HOPE IS GONE starts in a more cinematic way before giving way to Power riffs, choirs, and a nice headbanging rhythm. Verses are more cadenced, varied, interrupted by the ever-melodious Roberta, accompanied by the piano, which in these tones strongly reminds of Amy Lee, one of the best female voices of the genre. Quieter moments with the power ballad BREATH OF MY SOUL, with an inlay work between splendid and emotional lyrics and a melodic and bewitching piano. The chorus gives gooseflesh due to the wonderful vocal interpretation. Strings and orchestrations create a magical and unique atmosphere, especially in the middle of the second part, before the final refrain. Back to the orchestral Power with A DREAM'S ELEGY, another really beautiful piece with majestic choirs and a nice riffing in which peeks out Davide Bruno's growl.
SEVEN SEAS, SEVEN WINDS raises the bets with a faster Power Symphonic and also here a male growl (Adam Cook returns) which is an excellent counterbalance to Roberta's more lyrical tone. The introduction of some riffs tending towards Black and arrangements of high quality are impressive. Currently my favourite song of the album. Another break with the instrumental ETHEREAL VOICES FROM THE FOREST before THE WORLD OF UNKNOWN, a Heavy mid-tempo track flavoured by a beautiful duet by Roberta and Agatino Reitano before a Power blast. The closure of the work is entrusted to the slow beginning of HIDDEN CONSPIRACY, where strings and piano immediately give way to a Heavy / Power outburst and to a passionate and warm male cantato which also here duets with the sublime melodies created by Roberta.
Absolutely not to forget the lyrics (made by the versatile Roberta) which, behind narratives of myths and Nature, are linked by the common thread of an interior journey externalized as an imaginary travel between legends and stories. To read while deeply listening to the record and enjoying the splendid cover created by Massimiliano Mendolia, who was also "loaned" by Ancestral to consolidate a bond that crosses Sicily from one vertex to the other!
Astralium have a very valid proposal and, despite being at their debut, they demonstrate an uncommon confidence and compositional skills. The album is a concentrate of melody, Power and orchestral arrangements as it hasn’t been heard for quite some time; a syncretism between the best components of the tradition started by Rhapsody and the most modern Symphonic / Gothic influences that will lead Astralium to reach very high peaks.

Devo ammettere con molta sincerità che mi sono accostato agli Astralium solo da poco ed in maniera casuale, guidato dai suggerimenti di Youtube… Suggerimenti davvero ottimi (anche se tardivi rispetto alla data di release), perché hanno dato luogo ad un vero colpo di fulmine! La maestosità degli arrangiamenti sinfonici della band, la bellezza e grandiosità della voce di Roberta ed il tocco fortemente Power-oriented mi hanno immediatamente stregato.

Nel 2019 vede la luce questo Land of Eternal Dreams, debut album che farà sicuramente parlare di sé a lungo…
Si parte con REMEMBRANCE, intro che mette subito in chiaro il carattere fortemente sinfonico con delle belle orchestrazioni e cori, e si prosegue subito con THE JOURNEY, che aggiunge rocciosi riff Power/Symphonic di Rhapsodiana memoria, passando poi ad ispiratissimi fraseggi di chitarra sui quali parte la prima strofa che dà subito sfoggio della voce dolce e melodiosa di Roberta. La cantante dimostra sin da subito la sua ottima impostazione vocale con un range che varia tonalità senza mai strafare. Splendide tastiere accompagnano la chitarra nella costruzione del bridge che introduce la narrazione maschile del magistrale Adam Cook. RISING WAVES FROM THE OCEAN inizia con riff e arrangiamenti che ricordano molto i Nightwish e che portano ad un ritornello molto catchy. La canzone è molto varia, brevi accenni di note orientali staccano con i momenti più duri che introducono il cantato maschile del successivo ospite Tommy Johansson (Sabaton, Majestica). L’assolo di chitarra melodico è davvero pregevole e porta alla seconda parte della canzone che riprende toni più tendenti ad un Symphonic/Gothic Metal. L’alternanza tra le voci maschile e femminile continua nella successiva MY LIFE IS MY ETERNITY che, dopo un inizio di tastiera e violini, presenta arrangiamenti Power nelle chitarre taglienti ed in un assolo di chitarra davvero squisito eseguito da Stefano “Ghigas” Calvagno ed accompagnato da ispiratissime orchestrazioni. Nel chorus ritornano brevemente gli arrangiamenti arabeggianti, presenti come filo conduttore in molte delle canzoni. Cori epici in un refrain dal sapore marziale seguiti da una parte strumentale ancora Heavy rendono la seconda parte della traccia molto varia ed esaltante.
WHISPER IN THE SILENCE è sicuramente uno tra i migliori brani del lavoro. Non solo per le sempre splendide orchestrazioni e gli arrangiamenti Power/Heavy ma anche per come viene declamata la leggenda di Alfeo ed Aretusa (figura della mitologia greca da cui prende il nome la Fonte Aretusa, uno specchio d'acqua nell'isola di Ortigia, nella parte più antica della città siciliana di Siracusa). Il ritmo alterna momenti più cadenzati ed arrangiamenti a tratti oscuri come nella seconda parte della canzone, dove un assolo di chitarra virtuoso di Andrea Martongelli (Arthemis, Ellefson) anticipa l’intreccio vocale di Roberta con un altro ospite davvero eccezionale, Jo Lombardo, cantante dei siciliani Ancestral. HOPE IS GONE inizia in maniera più cinematica prima di partire con riff Power, cori, ed un bel ritmo da headbanging. Le strofe sono più cadenzate, varie, interrotte dalla sempre melodiosa di Roberta, accompagnata dal piano, che in queste tonalità ricorda molto Amy Lee, una delle migliori voci femminili del genere. Attimi più tranquilli con la power ballad BREATH OF MY SOUL, con un intarsio tra liriche splendide ed emozionali ed un pianoforte melodico ed ammaliante. Il chorus è da pelle d’oca per la stupenda interpretazione vocale. Archi e orchestrazioni creano un’atmosfera magica ed unica, soprattutto a metà della seconda parte, prima del refrain finale. Si ritorna al Power orchestrale con A DREAM’S ELEGY, altro pezzo davvero bello con cori maestosi ed un bel riffing in cui fa capolino il growl di Davide Bruno.
SEVEN SEAS, SEVEN WINDS alza il tiro con un Power Symphonic più veloce ed anche qui un growl maschile (nuovamente Adam Cook) che fa da ottimo contraltare alla tonalità più lirica di Roberta. Impressionante l’introduzione di alcuni riff tendenti al Black ed arrangiamenti di notevole caratura. Per adesso la mia canzone preferita dell’album. Altro stacco con la strumentale ETHEREAL VOICES FROM THE FOREST prima di THE WORLD OF UNKNOWN, traccia Heavy mid-tempo condita da un bellissimo duetto di voci tra Roberta ed Agatino Reitano prima di una sferzata Power. La chiusura del lavoro è affidata al lento inizio di HIDDEN CONSPIRACY, dove archi e pianoforte lasciano subito il passo ad una sfuriata Heavy/Power e ad un cantato maschile passionale e caldo che anche qui duetta con le sublimi melodie create da Roberta.
Assolutamente da non trascurare i testi (frutto della poliedrica Roberta) che, dietro a narrazioni di miti e Natura, sono legati dal filo conduttore di un viaggio interiore esteriorizzato come un cammino immaginario tra leggende e storie. Da leggere immersi nell’ascolto del disco e gustandosi la splendida cover realizzata da Massimiliano Mendolia, anche lui “prestato” dagli Ancestral per consolidare un legame che attraversa la Sicilia da un capo all’altro!
Gli Astralium hanno una proposta validissima e, pur essendo al debutto, dimostrano una sicurezza ed una bravura compositiva non comuni. L’album è un concentrato di melodia, di potenza e di arrangiamenti orchestrali come non si sentivano da tempo, un sincretismo tra le migliori componenti della tradizione iniziata dai Rhapsody e le influenze Symphonic/Gothic più moderne che porterà gli Astralium a toccare vette molto molto alte.
