Almost by chance, scrolling through the social web pages, I find a post on the Finnish Counting Hours and, attracted by the fascinating cover, I listen to the first tracks available online, being extremely impressed by the freshness with which the five Finns have composed their first full-length The Will, a Gothic / Doom metal album strongly influenced by sounds dear to bands like Katatonia, where the dark and decadent atmosphere evoked by the suggestive THE WILD intro is the absolute protagonist.
PROFOUND has a gothic-melodic attack of great impact where the initial clean vocals leave space and alternate with a growl that has the merit of counteracting the sweet darkness of the notes. The initial part of ATONEMENT is heavier which stands out as a track thanks to almost spoken vocalizations and an obsessive sound, while it is potentially a hit TO EXIT ALL FALSE which thanks to a captivating rhythm and the alternation of different vocals, turns out to be a little gem. In SAVIOUR the vocalist almost seems to tell a story that hypnotizes while in the following BLANK SUNRISE, BURIED IN THE WHITE and OUR TRIUMPH the leading mood remains unchanged, but the listener absolutely fails to detach the eardrums from these extremely involving sounds almost from other dimensions.
I would like to make a special mention to the final AMONG THE PINES WE'LL DIE, a piece which, although moving on the same Gothic / Alternative / Doom coordinates, has a truly engaging melody with flutes, keyboards and guitars from veterans of the genre. The growl is something primitive and anguishing in a context that the cover of the album expresses in the best way.
The Will is an album that in my opinion must be listened to with soft light and perhaps lying on a sofa imagining a cold but at the same time engaging and fascinating environment. One of the most interesting debut albums of recent months which gives Counting Hours the chance to expect a worthy successor from them. Revelation!

Quasi per caso scorrendo le pagine social trovo un post sui finlandesi Counting Hours e attirato dalla affascinante copertina ascolto i primi pezzi disponibili in rete rimanendo molto colpito dalla freschezza con cui i cinque finlandesi hanno composto il loro primo full-lenght The Will, un album di Gothic/Doom metal fortemente influenzato da sonorità care a gruppi come i Katatonia, dove l’atmosfera cupa e decadente evocata dalla suggestiva intro THE WILD è assoluta protagonista.
PROFOUND ha un attacco gotico-melodico di impatto dove clean vocals iniziali lasciano poi spazio e si alternano ad un growl che ha il merito di contrastare la dolce cupezza delle note. Più pesante è la parte iniziale di ATONEMENT che, come traccia, si contraddistingue grazie a vocalizzi quasi parlati e ad un sound ossessivo, mentre è potenzialmente una hit TO EXIT ALL FALSE che grazie ad un ritmo accattivante e all’alternanza di diverse vocalità risulta essere un piccolo gioiello. In SAVIOUR il vocalist sembra quasi raccontare una storia che ipnotizza mentre nelle successive BLANK SUNRISE, BURIED IN THE WHITE e OUR TRIUMPH il mood portante rimane invariato ma l’ascoltatore non riesce assolutamente a staccare i timpani da questi suoni coinvolgenti all’estremo e quasi da altra dimensione.
Mi sento di fare una menzione particolare alla conclusiva AMONG THE PINES WE’LL DIE, pezzo che seppur muovendosi sulle stesse coordinate Gothic/Alternative/Doom ha una melodia veramente coinvolgente con flauti, tastiere e chitarre da veterani del genere. Il growl è qualcosa di primitivo e angosciante in un contesto che la cover del lavoro esprime nel migliore dei modi.
The Will è un album che a mio parere deve essere ascoltato con luce soffusa e magari distesi su un divano immaginando un ambiente freddo ma allo stesso tempo coinvolgente e affascinante. Uno dei dischi d’esordio più interessanti degli ultimi mesi che dà ai Counting Hours la possibilità di aspettarsi da loro un degno successore. Rivelazione!
