Drakkar were formed in Milan (Italy) in the distant 1995. In this quarter of a century of career, among various line-up’ changes, they have produced two demos, three EPs and six full-length albums of which the last is this Chaos Lord, released six years after the previous Run with the Wolf. Always faithful to a Heavy/Power Metal with fantasy and battle themes, they arrive to this work with full maturity and a style that has made the constant growth their raison d'être, leading them to be today, in my opinion, a very solid reality at the same level of the best and most well-known foreign bands of the genre.
The current line-up sees, alongside the founder Dario Beretta (guitars) and veteran Davide Dell'Orto (vocals), the most recent acquisitions Simone Pesenti Gritti (bass), Daniele Ferru (drums) and Marco Rusconi (guitars, also in Crimson Dawn like Dario himself). As special guest Emanuele Laghi on keyboards, also a member of Crimson Dawn. The disc has been recorded and produced by Mattia Stancioiu (someone who knows one thing or two about Power Metal...) in his Elnor Studio and, as mentioned above, it keeps on a very solid and powerful Heavy/Power with epic atmospheres and truly intriguing melodies.
Album begins with the intro THE DREAMING CITY, in which the tension begins to rise, punctuated by martial and epic orchestrations, from a fantasy film soundtrack with the troops advancing ready for war. The lyrics of the work mainly follow literary sci-fi themes as immediately in LORD OF A DYING RACE, whose lord in question is Elric of Melniboné, lord of the Chaos of the universe created by Michael Moorcock. Song suddenly starts pounding hard with a decisive and frills-free Power, where the guitars draw precious and unique riffings and phrases. The chorus is powerful and epic, and the whole track is sustained by a precise and flawless rhythm section. The keyboards intervene when necessary to reinforce the sound without ever exceeding. The sonic fury does not calm down with the next HORNS UP! where the initial guitars’ razor-like hits followed by the powerful drumming push us to really raise our horns up to the sky and sing the anthemic refrain together. A more typically German Power song that, moving away from the main themes, conveys the experience and essence of being on stage, of the energy that is released by even overcoming technical problems and negative evenings. The bass lines stay in great evidence especially in the second more rhythmic part which then introduces the exquisite guitar solo.
The title track CHAOS LORD has a slower and more articulated trend; the track is full of pathos and Davide manages to convey it perfectly with his rough and powerful tone. The bridge accelerates in a crescendo that leads to the choral and majestic chorus, around which a truly inspired guitarworking develops itself. I hope not being wrong, but I see the inspiration from Warhammer 40,000 in the text and in particular from the figure of Abaddon the Despoiler, lord of Chaos. In any case, a truly remarkable song! Still sci-fi in the next song THROUGH THE HORSEHEAD NEBULA (perhaps Asimov this time?), which narrates the escape from the solar system and the consequent search for new worlds following the lighthouse of Alnitak, star of the Orion belt. This track also starts fast, with guitars that at times seem to create more Progressive melodies, and choral and epic choruses. THE BATTLE (DEATH FROM THE DEPTHS - PT. II) includes slower moments and the hammond that peeks out within this piece that remains on lower tones in which once again Davide's voice renders perfectly.
Change of register with the following AND HE WILL RISE AGAIN, a Folk/Power song linked to the myth of King Arthur and the famous sword Excalibur (which you should know was not the sword in the stone!), that alternates ballad moments, unique in the disc, and short interludes more purely Power. The track is enriched by Fabio Paciucci's acoustic guitar. FIREBIRD takes us back to more powerful and lightning-fast Power rhythms from central Europe. The song remains tense throughout its duration, with great guitar riffs and a stunning solo where guitar and keyboard challenge each other to a duel, alternating in creating the best solo on the album. The voice pushes more than in other songs for one of the best pieces on the album. THE PAGES OF MY LIFE keeps the pace high for the final TRUE TO THE END, an anthemic mid-tempo that recalls certain well-known American representatives of Epic/Heavy. The martial cadence, choirs and a great bass make me imagine of future concerts in which this track will be sung at the top of my voice at the end of a fascinating journey between powerful enemies, epic battles and glorious victories.
Chaos Lord is an album that transmits an incredible energy from the very first listen and easily ranks among the major albums of the genre. As already written, Drakkar show great maturity and I am convinced that with this line-up they can reach very high peaks.

I Drakkar nascono a Milano nell’oramai lontano 1995. In questo quarto di secolo di carriera, tra vari cambi di lineup, hanno prodotto due demo, tre EP e ben sei full-length di cui l’ultimo è questo Chaos Lord, rilasciato a sei anni di distanza dal precedente Run with the Wolf. Sempre fedeli ad un Heavy/Power Metal con tematiche fantasy e guerriere, giungono a questo lavoro con una piena maturità ed uno stile che ha fatto della crescita costante la sua ragion d’essere, portandoli ad essere oggi, a mio parere, una solidissima realtà paragonabile alle migliori e più note band estere del genere.
La formazione attuale vede, accanto al fondatore Dario Beretta (chitarre) e veterano Davide Dell’Orto (voce), i più recenti innesti Simone Pesenti Gritti (basso), Daniele Ferru (batteria) e Marco Rusconi (chitarre, anche lui nei Crimson Dawn dello stesso Dario). Come special guest alle tastiere Emanuele Laghi, anche lui in forza ai Crimson Dawn. Il disco è stato registrato e prodotto da Mattia Stancioiu (uno che di Power se ne intende…) nei suoi Elnor Studio e, come anticipato poc’anzi, si mantiene su un solidissimo e potente Heavy/Power con atmosfere epiche e melodie davvero intriganti.
Si comincia con l’intro THE DREAMING CITY, in cui la tensione inizia a salire, scandita da orchestrazioni marziali ed epiche, da colonna sonora di film fantasy con le truppe che avanzano pronte alla guerra. Le liriche del disco seguono principalmente temi di fantascienza letteraria come già da subito in LORD OF A DYING RACE, il cui lord in questione è Elric di Melniboné, signore del Caos dell’universo creato da Michael Moorcock. La canzone parte pestando subito forte con un Power deciso e senza fronzoli, dove le chitarre disegnano riffing e fraseggi preziosi ed unici. Il ritornello è potente ed epico, e tutta la traccia è supportata da una sezione ritmica precisa ed impeccabile. Le tastiere intervengono quando necessario a rinforzare il sound senza mai eccedere. La furia sonora non si placa con la successiva HORNS UP! dove le iniziali rasoiate di chitarra seguite dal potentissimo drumming ci spingono ad alzare davvero le corna al cielo ed a cantare insieme l’antemico ritornello. Una canzone da Power più tipicamente tedesco che, discostandosi dai temi principali, rende partecipi dell’esperienza e dell’essenza dello stare sul palco, dell’energia che ne viene sprigionata superando anche i problemi tecnici e le serate negative. Rimangono in grande evidenza le linee di basso soprattutto nella seconda parte più cadenzata che introduce poi lo squisito assolo di chitarra.
La title-track CHAOS LORD ha un andamento più lento ed articolato; la traccia è carica di pathos e Davide riesce a convogliarlo perfettamente con la sua timbrica ruvida e potente. Il bridge accelera in un crescendo che porta al ritornello corale e maestoso, attorno al quale si sviluppa un guitarworking davvero ispirato. Non vorrei sbagliare ma leggo nel testo l’ispirazione da Warhammer 40,000 ed in particolare dalla figura di Abaddon the Despoiler, signore del Caos. Canzone in ogni caso notevole! Ancora sci-fi nel brano successivo THROUGH THE HORSEHEAD NEBULA (Asimov stavolta?) che narra la fuga dal sistema solare e la conseguente ricerca di nuovi mondi seguendo il faro di Alnitak, stella della cintura di Orione. Anche questa traccia inizia veloce con chitarre che a tratti sembrano creare melodie più Progressive e ritornelli corali ed epici. THE BATTLE (DEATH FROM THE DEPTHS – PT. II) presenta momenti più lenti e l’hammond che fa capolino all’interno del pezzo che resta su tonalità più basse in cui ancora una volta la voce di Davide rende alla perfezione.
Si cambia un po’ registro con AND HE WILL RISE AGAIN, canzone Folk/Power legata al mito di Artù e della famosa spada Excalibur (che notate bene non era la spada nella roccia!), che alterna momenti da ballad, unici nel disco, e brevi intermezzi più puramente Power. Il tutto impreziosito dalla chitarra acustica di Fabio Paciucci. FIREBIRD ci riporta a ritmi più mitteleuropei potenti e fulminei. La canzone resta tirata per tutta la sua durata, con grandi riff di chitarra ed un assolo da paura dove chitarra e tastiera si sfidano a duello alternandosi nella creazione del miglior solo dell’album. La voce spinge più che in altri brani per uno dei migliori pezzi dell’album. THE PAGES OF MY LIFE tiene il ritmo alto per la conclusiva TRUE TO THE END, mid-tempo antemica a ricordare certi noti rappresentanti americani dell’Epic/Heavy. La cadenza marziale, cori e un basso in gran spolvero mi fanno pensare ai futuri concerti in cui questa traccia sarà cantata a squarciagola a chiusura di un viaggio affascinante tra potenti nemici, epiche battaglie e gloriose vittorie.
Chaos Lord è un disco che trasmette una carica notevole fin dal primo ascolto e si colloca agilmente tra i maggiori album del genere. Come già scritto, i Drakkar dimostrano una grandissima maturità e son convinto che con questa lineup possano raggiungere vette molto alte.
