Fated is the debut album of Russian Post metallers Smyčka. Band was formed in 2017 by Vasily Belov (guitars) later joined by Vova Antonov (bass), Anton Selivanov (drums) and Kira Koshkina (vocals). The project was born from the idea of setting Franz Kafka's stories to music with an experimental approach, through which the album resulted in synthesis of Post Metal, Black and Ambient influences creating an obscure and emotional sound.
INTRO brings us directly into the album’s atmospheres, where Doom-influenced instrumental Post Metal is characterized by a juxtaposition of clean guitar phrasing with harder riffs. This alternation is the distinctive tract of the whole work; the use of aggressive and melodic sounds is used to emphasize the feeling of confusion and personal devastation as well as in the vocal style, where clean melodic are seamlessly followed by extreme growls, seamlessly. Some of the songs feature a more experimental approach, such as FATED, where the initial obsessive guitarworking changes towards the mid part of the track showing an almost jazzy mood while keeping deeply dark arrangements in a vortex of clean, screaming and growling vocals. The following MUT(AT)ED and WRECKED are showing more Black and Heavy influences, pounding and slower rhythms than the previous tracks, increasing the sense of dismemberment of the personality. Wrecked, in particular, is more atmospheric and the voice itself is getting feebler, dreamlike, before exploding again with a furious growl.
BETRAYED add some ambient tones to the work, presenting itself almost as an atmospheric Sludge with evident Doom parts. Surely a difficult song to classify but that represent, in my view, the most authentic spirit of this combo. TORN is the last track that does not change the main coordinates of this work, which ultimately succeeds in conveying a sense of fear, helplessness, and desperate resistance to fate as was its intention.
I do not know if this will remain an isolated project but, despite a certain repetitiveness in the tracks presented and a production that in some parts need a more professional touch, Smyčka have shown good skills and a good growth potential, and I am certain that with a subsequent work they will reach higher peaks.

Fated è l'album di debutto dei Post metallers russi Smyčka. La band è stata formata nel 2017 da Vasily Belov (chitarre) a cui si sono poi aggiunti Vova Antonov (basso), Anton Selivanov (batteria) e Kira Koshkina (voce). Il progetto nasce dall’idea di musicare le storie di Franz Kafka con un approccio sperimentale, tramite cui l’album risulta essere una sintesi di influenze Post Metal, Black e Ambient creando un suono oscuro ed emotivo.
INTRO ci porta direttamente nelle atmosfere dell'album, dove il Post Metal strumentale influenzato dal Doom è caratterizzato da un contrapporsi di fraseggi di chitarra puliti con riff più duri. Questa alternanza è il tratto distintivo dell'intera opera; l'uso di suoni aggressivi e melodici è utilizzato per enfatizzare la sensazione di confusione e devastazione personale così come nello stile vocale, dove linee melodiche pulite vengono seguite da growl estremi, senza soluzione di continuità. Alcune delle canzoni presentano un approccio più sperimentale, come FATED, dove la chitarra ossessiva iniziale cambia verso la metà della traccia mostrando un mood quasi jazz, e mantenendo arrangiamenti profondamente oscuri, in un vortice di voci pulite, urlate e growl. Le seguenti MUT(AT)ED e WRECKED mostrano influenze più Black e Heavy, ritmi martellanti e più lenti rispetto alle tracce precedenti, aumentandone il senso di smembramento della personalità. In particolare Wrecked è più atmosferica e la voce stessa diventa più debole, onirica, prima di esplodere ancora con un growl furioso.
BETRAYED aggiunge alcuni toni Ambient al lavoro, presentandosi quasi come uno Sludge atmosferico con chiare parti Doom. Sicuramente una canzone difficile da classificare ma che rappresenta, a mio avviso, lo spirito più autentico del combo. TORN è l'ultima traccia che non modifica le coordinate principali di questo lavoro, che in definitiva riesce nell’intento di trasmettere un senso di paura, impotenza e disperata resistenza al destino.
Non so se questo rimarrà un progetto isolato ma, nonostante una certa ripetitività nei brani presentati ed una produzione che in alcune parti necessita un tocco più professionale, gli Smyčka hanno mostrato buone capacità e un buon potenziale di crescita, e sono certo che con un potenziale lavoro successivo raggiungeranno vette più alte.
