I approach without any previous band’s knowledge the listening of this Prophet of the Astral Gods, second album by Mindfar. The Metal Opera created by Armando de Angelis had its debut in 2017 with a work inspired by the cycle of "The Black Tower" by master Stephen King and comes back today with this album based on an original text halfway between sci-fi and fiction history about human evolution. The disc line-up includes Manuele Di Ascenzo (Kaledon) on drums, Alex Mele (Kaledon, ScreaMachine) on guitars, Alessandro Battini (Dark Horizon, Ghost City, Sangreal) on keyboards and Micael Branno (Ghost City) on bass.

The intro CIVILIZATION GIFT, cinematic and orchestral, has an immediately direct impact further enhanced by the inclusion of the guitars with their distorted riffs, immediately making clear the Heavy/Prog tone of the work. KEEPER OF YOUR DESTINY starts with a choir and a Heavy ride that develops in a tight Power/Prog piece. Each of the guest singers has his "debut" in this first piece with at least one solo verse alternating in the narrative and then with the choral refrain. The ensemble of voices, together with the orchestrations and in particular the strings, gives a strong symphonic tone to the piece. Perhaps the extreme alternation of voices affects a little the development of songwriting in a song which, right at the opening of the album, would instead have benefited more of that. THE EYE OF RA introduces oriental orchestrations with the use of the sitar that remains even when the tone changes completely with very inspired guitars and background orchestrations. A really interesting mid-tempo, more Hard/AOR oriented, and with one of the best vocals of the lot. Towards the middle of the song the riffs become more solid and prepare a nice crescendo that leads towards the end of the song. Organ and guitars in HEROES AND WONDERS, which then develops a heavier theme on the warmer and more melodious voice to which female lyrics are superimposed in an interesting intertwining. Towards the end it changes tone with a piano that creates an atmosphere full of pathos and with still pleasant back and forth of male voices first and then male and female (excellent the performance by Claudia Beltrame/The Oracle throughout the album).

A martial theme, with trumpets and war drums marks the beginning of ONE PROPHET, a 13-minute suite that alternates a Heavy/Prog with strongly dramatic tones with slow, evocative, and melodic moments in which piano and voice create a progressive crescendo that explodes then in the chorus along with all the other instruments. The track then continues to alternate ballad-style parts with more Power/Progressive sections in which solid phrases and riffs combined with majestic choruses create arrangements with an epic flavour. To be noted a beautiful guitar solo surrounded by orchestrations. A varied piece that keeps the attention high throughout its duration by carefully dosing melody and aggression together with the various voices of the protagonists (the whole first part by Guido Macaione/The Messiah, to which Ignacio Rodriguez/The Prophet is added first, and then in the last part Anders Skold/The Dictator also protagonist of the recited verses in Latin).

The melodic variation between more delicate and tense moments persists in the following SENT FROM THE STARS, a piece closer to an intense Power Symphonic where the female voice becomes the protagonist together with the keyboards of the guest keyboardist Andrea De Paoli, and in WALLS, which after a slow ballad-like start, it changes to a more sustained rhythm with Folk lines and then turns it on a more symphonic Power too. The epic and mighty choirs, in which all the singers participate, make it one of my favourite songs. The vocal solo parts are by Tom-Vidar Salangli/The Sailor, The Messiah, The Prophet and The Dictator. BEYOND THE EDGE OF THE WORLD slows down with an intense and melodic orchestral ballad that sees the participation of Gianluca Carlini on acoustic guitar. With REVOLUTION we return to a direct and powerful Power with a refrain made majestic by choral melodies and the keyboards always in great evidence. RAPSODIA is a pleasant orchestral interlude that is “electrified” in the second part giving an even more epic tone to the piece. The initial arpeggio of SPIRITS OF WAR seems to recall a heavy classic tribute to a well-known English band, but it does not last long, giving space to a well-made Power/Symphonic Prog. ASCEND TO DIVINITY is the grand finale that closes the work with a very emotional mid-tempo, in which the keyboards are still creating most of the arrangements embellished by a ‘70s style Hammond organ in the second part as well as by a clean guitar and double voices. Each of the singers here has again the opportunity to express themself fully with solo parts wider than in the other songs. A pearl.

A work that demonstrates great technical skill and compositional variety. The contribution of the various musicians and especially of the guest singers is splendid and creates very intense moments with instrumental "duels", vocal exchanges, choirs, and extremely valuable duets. Perhaps the only drawback, purely my opinion, could be the lack of songs that stands out more than the others but that does not alter the positive judgment on the album.
