We were waiting with a bit of trepidation the successor of “What the Oak Left” from Italian Atlas Pain; that album was a real surprise and back then in 2017 he brought something innovative within the Italian metal scene. The new “Tales of a Pathfinder” promises to be an amazing journey through far and different lands and the intro THE COLDEST YEAR gives the go to this trip in a circus mood fashion.
THE MOVING EMPIRE immediately raises the volumes, the Folk-Epic-Pagan metal played by Atlas Pain is even more charming thank to refrains that remain carved in listener’s mind since the beginning. Speed metal and folk metal frames are interchanged in a track that makes a clear statement regarding band’s purposes, that to bring us in an endless journey.
HAGACURE’S WAY is, in the head of the writer, one of the most successful song of the whole album, a real melodic intro is well articulated by the vocalist Samuele Faulisi’s growl and it is soon followed by a folk metal chorus of uncommon force. In the outro of the song the spoken part by Samuele is mixed with a really inspired melody.
ODAUDEGLUR is the fastest track of this work in which are evident some musical links to black metal done in a so incisive way to lead to a powerful headbanging following the pounding rhythm. In the final part the song is settling down in a really inspired melodic arrangement. THE GREAT RUN is the most various passage of Tales of a Pathfinder; the band has managed to include in it all the different sides of their sound and those are maybe the most significative minutes to really realize what are the Atlas Pain today. Worth of mention the almost techno style bridge that introduces a sensational folk chorus.
KIA KAHA, by the means of a tribal like intro, throw us in savages lands owned by wild tribes, Fabrizio Tartarini’s guitar brings on more melodic paths leading the way to what the band is able to do best, a really enviable and unmatched folk-pagan metal. With SHAHRAZAD we are in the most peculiar song of the album and it shows us the other side of Atlas Pain’s sound, as unexpected as beautiful at the same time.
Record is closed by HOMELAND, the end of the journey, the promised land! Amazing effect is given by the variation between the clean vocals (at the beginning of the song) and the growl while the whole piece is a musical mix of folk moments, speed metal outbursts and well inspired guitar solos. All of that in a captivating fashion. Gloomy outro THE FIRST SIGHT OF A BLIND MAN reminds us that the path is completed.
TALES OF A PATHFINDER is an intense and passionate album, that improves even more Atlas Pain’s sound and that enriches what band has proposed in the previous, though fully satisfactory, work.

Attendevamo con una certa trepidazione il successore di “What the Oak Left” dei milanesissimi Atlas Pain, album che ci aveva piacevolmente sorpreso e che aveva portato nel 2017 un qualcosa di diverso all’interno del panorama metal italiano. Il nuovo lavoro “Tales of a pathfinder” promette essere un viaggio tra terre lontane e diversissime e l’intro THE COLDEST YEAR, attraverso un mood circense, da inizio a tutto.
THE MOVING EMPIRE spara subito in alto i volumi, il Folk-Epic-Pagan metal dei nostri risulta ancora più accattivante con refrein che rimangono scolpiti sin da subito nella mente dell’ascoltatore. Momenti speed metal si alternano a intermezzi folk in un pezzo che mette subito in chiaro le intenzioni della band, ovvero accompagnarci in un viaggio senza ritorno.
HAGACURE’S WAY è a parere di scrive uno dei pezzi più riusciti dell’intero lavoro, l’introduzione molto melodica viene scandita dal growl del vocalist Samuele Faulisi che viene seguito da un ritornello folk metal di rara intensità. Nella parte finale il parlato di Samuele si mescola ad una melodia particolarmente inspirata.
ODAUDEGLUR è la traccia più veloce dell'opera in cui si intravedono anche dei riferimenti musicali al black metal e ciò viene fatto in modo particolarmente incisivo spingendo il nostro headbanging a ritmi esagerati. Nella parte finale il tutto si assesta su una melodia ancora azzeccata. THE GREAT RUN è il brano più vario di “Tales of a pathfinder” in esso vengono inserite tutte le varie sfaccettature del sound della band e sono forse questi i minuti che identificano cosa sono gli Atlas Pain oggi. Da menzionare l’intermezzo quasi techno che introduce un ritornello folk ancora sensazionale.
KIA KAHA attraverso una intro quasi tribale ci catapulta in territori controllati da tribù selvagge, la chitarra di Fabrizio Tartarini ci riporta poi su sentieri più melodici e poi su quello che la band sa fare in maniera veramente invidiabile un folk-pagan metal da sballo. SHAHRAZAD è invece il pezzo più atmosferico dell’intero lavoro e ci mostra un’altra faccia del sound degli Atlas Pain, inaspettata ma bellissima.
Il disco si chiude con HOMELAND la fine del viaggio, la terra promessa! Di particolare impatto questa volta è l’alternarsi tra le clean vocals iniziali e quelle growl mentre musicalmente nel pezzo si intrecciano momenti folk, sfuriate speed metal e assoli di chitarra ispiratissimi. Il tutto fatto in una maniera veramente accattivante. La malinconica outro THE FIRST SIGHT OF A BLIND MAN ci rammenta che il viaggio è terminato.
TALES OF A PATHFINDER è un lavoro intenso e travolgente che aggiunge ancora qualcosa al sound della band e migliora quello che la band aveva proposto nel suo precedente lavoro seppur già decisamente soddisfacente.
