Lacuna Coil are probably the most known Italian metal band abroad. This could be due to the fact that their style has been, since the beginning, influenced by some overseas tendencies and, in fact, they always got very positive feedbacks from American’s market while being in tour several times. BLACK ANIMA is Lacuna Coil’s ninth album and it walks the same path opened by the most recent works both in musical choices and intense lyrics.
ANIMA NERA is a prologue that opens this new album. The literally translation of the full-length’s title anticipates the mood that pervades the entire work, where intimate and strong lyrics, proudly and powerfully sang by Cristina, are surrounded by a soundtrack-like arrangement creating an overall sense of anxiety about human condition.
The growl of Andrea screaming “We are the Anima – Ride” opens the doors to the powerful bass/drums riff that introduces SWORD OF ANGER. Trademark of the band is well respected in this song alternating clean melodic vocals by Cristina and dark growl by Andrea over melodic verses emphasized by the effective guitar lines by Diego Cavallotti (with the band since 2016). RECKLESS (a promise?) is a mid-tempo winking the eye towards a more alternative/industrial metal style in which Cristina clean vocals are in even more evidence compared to previous song.
LAYERS OF TIME is another anthemic track that alternates obscure verses sang by Andrea with the clean melancholic chorus terrain of Cristina. Maki’s bass lines are always pounding hard in the bridges even more than in other works and, together with keyboards, maintain that heavy and almost suffocating musical mood leitmotiv of the album. While APOCALYPSE is going down in the next track, the alternative metal proposed by the band shows a certain degree of matureness well balanced with melodic lines of keyboard and the warm guitar solo of this song. More “heavy” guitar frames in NOW OR NEVER together with cleaner vocals also from Andrea and a verse industrial-screamed mark the passage with UNDER THE SURFACE that in the verses composition show the more melodic side of Lacuna Coil, catchy in more than one passage.
A Latin sang verse is the beginning of VENEFICIUM, song that recalls the “young” age of Lacuna Coil, more commercial maybe but undoubtedly unforgotten. The melodic guitar solo is one of my personally preferred of the album. THE END IS ALL I CAN SEE is the slower piece of the work, with a waving guitar sound across the song that well depicts the sense of feeling lost in a maze, of a circular movement around something that cannot be catch. SAVE ME and BLACK ANIMA are the last two tracks of the album, the latter resuming the style of the album but giving it a more obscure musical tone while keeping a sense of positiveness in the lyrics.
It is really a pity to see how despised they still are by a certain part of their motherland public that praise instead similar (or worse) foreigner bands. “Nemo propheta acceptus est in patria sua” (No prophet is ever well accepted in his own homeland) remains valid after millennia and it is sadly true for many Italian metal bands despite their real value.

I Lacuna Coil sono senza troppi dubbi la metal band italiana più conosciuta all’estero. Potrebbe essere dovuto al fatto che il loro stile sia stato influenzato, fin dagli esordi, da tendenze oltreoceano e, d’altra parte, hanno sempre ricevuto numerosi e positivi apprezzamenti dal mercato americano facendo anche molti tours e stringendo legami con varie bands statunitensi. BLACK ANIMA è il nono album dei Lacuna Coil e segue lo stesso percorso aperto dai più recenti lavori sia come scelte musicali che come testi molto profondi ed intensi.
ANIMA NERA è un prologo che apre questo nuovo album. La traduzione letterale del titolo di questo lavoro anticipa e conferma il mood che permea l’intero disco, dove test forti e personali cantanti con orgoglio e potenza da Cristina sono circondati da un arrangiamento quasi da colonna sonora che crea un senso di ansietà generale nei confronti della condizione umana.
Il growl di Andrea che urla “We are the Anima – Ride” spalanca le porte ad uno spettacolare riff di basso/batteria che introduce SWORD OF ANGER. Il marchio della band è ben visibile in questa canzone che alterna le linee melodiche pulite di Cristina con il tetro growl di Andrea su strofe melodiche supportate dai versi di chitarra suonati da Diego Cavallotti (nella band dal 2016). RECKLESS (una promessa?) è un mid-tempo che, nello strizzare l’occhio ad uno stile molto più orientato verso un alternative/industrial, mette il cantato di Cristina in maggiore evidenza rispetto ad altre canzoni.
LAYERS OF TIME è un’altra traccia antemica che alterna i versi oscuri di Andrea ai ritornelli melodici e puliti fertile terreno per Cristina. Le linee di basso di Maki picchiano sempre duro nei bridges, in questo album forse ancora più che nei precedenti, e con l’aiuto delle tastiere mantengono quel senso di pesantezza e soffocamento musicale che è un tratto tipico di tutto il lavoro. Mentre APOCALYPSE si scatena nella canzone successiva, l’alternative metal proposto dalla band mostra un certo grado di maturità ben bilanciato nelle linee melodiche di tastiera e nel suono caldo dell’assolo di chitarra della canzone. NOW OR NEVER ci permette di ascoltare un impianto più “heavy” oriented nei suoni di chitarra e nelle linee vocali più pulite anche da parte di Andrea che si intrecciano attorno a strofe di tipo più industrial prima di passare il testimone a UNDER THE SURFACE che, nella composizione delle strofe, mostra il lato più melodico dei Lacuna Coil, davvero orecchiabile anche più che in altri passaggi.
Un verso cantato in latino è l’inizio di VENEFICIUM, canzone che richiama i “giovani” Lacuna Coil, forse più commerciali ma sicuramente mai dimenticati. Lo stupendo assolo di chitarra è uno dei miei preferiti dell’intero album. THE END IS ALL I CAN SEE è uno dei pezzi più lenti dell’opera, con un suono ondulante di chitarra che attraversa la canzone e che riesce a rendere il senso di smarrimento in un labirinto, o il senso di un movimento continuo circolare attorno a qualcosa che non si riesce ad afferrare. SAVE ME e BLACK ANIMA sono le ultime due tracce dell’album, la seconda in particolare ne riassume lo stile dandogli un tono musicale ancora più oscuro mantenendo però, nei testi, un messaggio di speranza e positività.
E’ davvero spiacevole constatare come i ragazzi siano ancora disprezzati da una certa parte del pubblico della madrepatria che invece poi esalta band simili se non peggiori. “Nemo propheta acceptus est in patria sua” è purtroppo valido dopo millenni e tristemente vero per molte metal bands italiane a dispetto del loro vero valore.
