It has been a very long wait for the new album, possibly a masterpiece, by VISION DIVINE (premiered months before by the splendid ANGEL OF REVENGE). Olaf Thorsen’s creature gets ready by the starting line with a renewed line-up in which stands out the new vocalist Ivan Giannini, whose presence shall make impossible to avoid comparisons with former singers Fabio Lione and Michele Luppi (no need of presentation for those big calibres of the Italian and world metal scene), and Mike Terrana on drums at his first studio album. This supergroup is then integrated with the expert and fundamental Andrea “Tower” Torricini, Federico Puleri and Alessio Lucatti.
We are welcomed in this new musical chapter by the intro INSURGENT, a melody of uncommon beauty that shall lead us for the whole work serving as a narrative thread of the opera. The power of THE 26TH MACHINE shows us a band in great and inspired shape, with a refrain that captures since the first listening and where Ivan Giannini’s voice does not show itself up at all, proving once more that Olaf & c. are always able to pull out aces from their cylinder. In the middle part of the song special quote for the Olaf guitar solos and for Alessio’s keyboard arrangement.
3 MEN WALK ON THE MOON is the first single taken from the album, a real Vision Divine song! What really hits is how they are able to mix genres and influences in the same track by keeping a personal and original music style. FALL FROM GRACE moves on more heavy textures and the result remains amazing. Throughout the chorus we are literally thrown in a dreamlike dimension, blasting solos without exceeding in too much virtuosity bring us to the end of the song, all scanned by the abrasive Ivan’s vocal skill.
WERE I GOD is the most melodic track of WATHAD, while the title track NOW THAT ALL THE HEROES ARE DEAD highlights Ivan skills even on more lilting rhythms, before accelerating the sound inflaming the musical conduct of all the band’s musicians, from rhythmic duo Andrea and Mike by the keyboards played by Alessio to the guitars by Olaf and Federico.
With WHILE THE SUN IS TURNING BLACK, Vision are bringing back ballad style sounds but still they hit the target by creating a melodic melody occasionally being really touching. A real gem! THE KING OF THE SKY is the second single taken from the album. Here power metal really throws its weight! Vision Divine prove that this genre is fertile ground for them, and they unleash an excellent performance in which Mike on drums is absolutely phenomenal.
ON THE IDES OF MARCH has got a real charming intro by Olaf and Ivan is still at the fore. The song develops itself on power metal paths and the refrain is fascinating as few others. Worth of mentioning also in this track the amazing guitar solo. 300 starts in a powerful way, a power that follows through an irresistible melody that is pure Vision Divine trademark. Rhythm section, where “Tower” and Mike are punching like crazy, is a time bomb ready to explode. Olaf and Federico guitars and Ivan’s style (sublime) are conveying the strength expressed in this track making it sharp and gentle at the same time.
I have few doubt in saying that, for me, THE NIHIL PROPAGANDA is the masterpiece of WATHAD. From a musical point of view it resumes the incipit of Insurgent, but the absolute surprise (goose bumps) is the insertion on the song of the poem “L’Infinito” from Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi, declaimed in such a gigantic way and surrounded by a music that exalted its poetic and artistic strength. A hymn to Italian art and culture of which Vision Divine are standard bearers.
When All the Heroes are Dead it’s a real masterpiece and one of the highest peaks of Vision Divine’ career.

Era tantissima l’attesa per il nuovo album e possibile capolavoro dei “Vision Divine” (anticipato qualche mese fa dalla splendida ANGEL OF REVENGE). La creatura di Olaf Thorsen si presenta ai nastri di partenza con una nuova line up in cui spicca la presenza del nuovo vocalist Ivan Giannini per cui sarà impossibile durante l’ascolto non fare dei paragoni con i precedenti frontman Fabio Lione e Michele Luppi (blasonatissimi nomi della scena metal italiana e non solo) e l’esordio dietro le pelli in studio dell’inossidabile Mike Terrana. Tuttavia la formazione dei Vision Divine è quella ormai di un supergruppo e viene completata dai veterani e fondamentali Andrea “Tower” Torricini, Federico Puleri, Alessio Lucatti.
Veniamo introdotti nel nuovo capitolo discografico dall’intro INSURGENT, una melodia di rara bellezza che ci farà compagnia anche in altri frangenti del disco fungendo quindi da trait d’union all’interno dell’intera opera. Il power di THE 26TH MACHINE ci mostra una band in grandissima ed ispirata forma con un refrain che coinvolge sin dal primo ascolto e dove la voce di Ivan Giannini non sfigura per niente, anzi dimostra che ancora una volta Olaf & C. hanno tirato fuori dal cilindro un vero fuoriclasse. Nella parte centrale del pezzo da menzionare gli assoli di Olaf alla chitarra e Alessio alle tastiere.
3 MEN WALK ON THE MOON è il primo singolo estratto dall’album, un grandissimo pezzo alla Vision Divine! Quello che colpisce è come i nostri riescano all’interno di uno stesso brano a mescolare generi, influenze rendendo il tutto assolutamente personale e distinguibile. In FALL FROM GRACE ci si muove su sonorità più heavy ed il risultato è ancora stupefacente. Attraverso il ritornello veniamo letteralmente catapultati in una dimensione onirica, ancora assoli da sballo ma senza troppi virtuosismi ci accompagnano alla fine del brano, il tutto scandito dal graffiante cantato di Ivan.
WERE I GOD è la traccia più melodica di WATHAD, mentre la title track NOW THAT ALL THE HEROES ARE DEAD mette in evidenza le capacità di Ivan anche su ritmi più cadenzati, il pezzo si sviluppa poi su ritmi più veloci che esaltano l’operato di tutti i musicisti dalla band, dalla sezione ritmica di Andrea e Mike alle tastiere di Alessio alle chitarre di Olaf e Federico.
Con WHILE THE SUN IS TURNING BLACK I Vision ci riportano a ritmi quasi da ballad ma ancora una volta centrano il bersaglio attraverso una melodia ipnotica ed a tratti commovente. Una vera perla! THE KING OF THE SKY è il secondo estratto come singolo dall’album. Qui il power metal fa da padrone! I Vision Divine dimostrano che il genere è per loro terreno fertilissimo e sfoderano una prova impeccabile dove Mike alla batteria è assolutamente fenomenale.
ON THE IDES OF MARCH ha un’intro molto accattivante con Olaf e Ivan è ancora sugli scudi. Il brano si sviluppa ancora su sentieri power ed il refrain è coinvolgente come pochi. Da segnalare ancora una volta l’assolo di chitarra veramente spettacolare. 300 appare nella sua parte iniziale potente, una potenza accompagnata da una melodia irresistibile ancora marchio di fabbrica dei nostri. La sezione ritmica all’interno della quale il “Tower” e Mike picchiano davvero forte è una vera bomba ad orologeria. Le chitarre di Olaf e Federico ed il cantato di Ivan (ancora sublime) indirizzano la potenza espressa in questo pezzo rendendola a tratti dolce ma anche tagliente.
THE NIHIL PROPAGANDA è a mio modestissimo parere il brano capolavoro di WATHAD, viene ripreso musicalmente l’incipit di Insurgent, ma l’assoluta sorpresa (da vera pelle d’oca) è l’inserimento nella traccia dell’infinito di Leopardi (già proprio così) recitato in maniera immensa e accompagnato da una musica che ne esalta la potenza poetica ed artistica in un inno all’italianità di cui i Vision Divine sembrano essere ormai gli assoluti alfieri.
When All the Heroes are Dead è una vera e propria opera d’arte ed uno dei punti più alti della carriera dai Vision Divine.
