It was long ago, at the Gods Of Metal of 2012, the first time in which I bumped into the sound wall of Lamb of God. I still remember the disappointment in not being able to see Black Sabbath in their original lineup but “only” the Prince of Darkness featuring his prestigious friends. Disappointment that was mainly rewarded by the discovery of a band that, since then, I tirelessly followed. I was amazed by their great technical skills (especially in the rhythmic section) and even more by the incredible live charge that began the pogo and several “circles of death” that in that event were seen only during their performance.
A long time has now passed and the “Lamb of God”, having solved serious legal issues linked to frontman Randy Blythe, was able to issue in 2015 a real masterpiece “VII: Sturm und Drang” followed today, after the EP “The Duke” as of 2016, by an ambitious full-length simply named “Lamb of God”.
Could it be a new beginning? It may be… the long-time incredible drummer Chris Adler left its place to Art Cruz, named his own successor by Chris itself during an interview. Nothing more true than that since the sound has not suffered any major change and the production seems even better that the just mentioned splatter “VII” (that I referred to as masterpiece).
MEMENTO MORI is a killing track since months on rotation in my player, an evocative intro paves the way for a violent sound outburst at first, followed by some incredible riffs that cannot be simply classified as thrash/death or black being instead patrimony of the whole metal as genre. Majestic!
CHECKMATE has a rock ‘n roll like intro really pleasant, soon however track is moving back to more suitable environment for LOG where Blythe’s work is really crazy and if confirms the flexibility of his voice in extreme ranges. GEARS has a constant and stable rhythm except for the final section where, beside the enchanting singing, it absolutely worth of mention the guitar work by Mark Morton and Willie Adler. REALITY BATH has a pure thrash feeling alternated with such refrains to make mainstream the extreme.
NEW COLOSSAL HATE, as suggested by the title itself, gives the listener an unprecedent hate hail. Song keeps thrash coordinates but heavily built up with a perfect result. In addition, the multiplicity of vocal shades it’s appropriated and makes the track various and captivating. Masters! In RESURRECTION MAN the unexpected Lamb of God appear! Doom even! Far from being a filler, LOG manage to bring out an incredible performance even in an environment (or battlefield) that apparently seemed not being theirs. POISON DREAM includes both heavy metal and new metal textures (to be mentioned the special guesting by James Jasta from Hatebreed), possibly this could be the lower peak of the album.
ROUTES is instead a pure thrash manifesto where the performance by Chuck Billy from Testament manages (obviously) to offer something more to the work. The three minutes are running fast and the headbanging is mandatory since the first listening! BLOODSHOT EYES (still a nearly new metal song) and ON THE HOOK (still fucking thrash) close a really inspired album, excellently produced, reassuring us that even without Chris Adler, the Lamb of God has a bright future ahead!

Era l’ormai lontano Gods Of Metal del 2012 l’evento in cui mi imbattei per la prima volta nel muro sonoro dei Lamb of God. Ricordo che la mia delusione nel non poter vedere i Black Sabbath nella loro formazione originaria ma “solo” il principe delle tenebre accompagnato dai suoi illustri “friends” fu in gran parte ripagata dalla scoperta di un gruppo che da quel momento in poi ho seguito senza sosta. Mi colpì la grande capacità tecnica (soprattutto nella sezione ritmica) ma non potrò mai dimenticare l’immensa carica live che diede inizio ad un pogo ed a sparsi “circle of death” che nel corso di quella edizione si videro solo in presenza della band americana.
Da quella fantastica edizione del Gods of Metal ne è passata di acqua ponti.. l’Agnello di Dio dopo aver superato i seri problemi legali del proprio frontman Randy Blythe è stato in grado di sfornare un vero capolavoro nel 2015 come “VII: Sturm und Drang” ed oggi dopo l’ulteriore EP “The Duke” del 2016 ci presenta un nuovo ambiziosissimo full lenght denominato semplicemente “Lamb of God”.
Forse un nuovo inizio? Potrebbe essere.. lo storico batterista e per me fenomenale Chris Adler ha lasciato lo scettro a Art Cruz definito dallo stesso Chris in una recente intervista come suo degno erede. Affermazione quest’ultima che condivido in toto, il sound infatti ne risente pochissimo e la produzione risulta addirittura migliore rispetto al sopracitato precedente splatter “VII” (che attenzione ho definito capolavoro).
MEMENTO MORI è un pezzo micidiale ed ormai da mesi in heavy rotation nel mio lettore dove una intro evocativa lascia spazio dapprima ad una sfuriata di una violenza sonora inaudita e successivamente a dei riff che non devono e non possono essere classificati come thrash, death o black ma come patrimonio del metal inteso come unico genere. Maestosi!
CHECKMATE ha un attacco quasi rock ‘n roll ed il che è molto piacevole, il pezzo ci riporta però quasi immediatamente su ambiti più consoni ai LOG dove il lavoro di Blythe è pazzesco e conferma la versatilità della sua voce in ambito estremo. GEARS ha un ritmo costante e incessante tranne nella parte finale dove oltre ad un cantato coinvolgente è assolutamente da menzionare il lavoro alle chitarre di Mark Morton e Willie Adler. REALITY BATH ha un feeling prettamente thrash intervallato da dei refrain capaci di far diventare l'estremo mainstream.
NEW COLOSSAL HATE come suggerito dallo stesso titolo è una scarica d’odio sull’ascoltatore senza precedenti. La traccia si muove ancora su sonorità thrash ma pompate all’inverosimile e tutto suona alla perfezione. Inoltre la varietà delle tonalità vocali utilizzate è azzeccatissima e rende il pezzo vario e coinvolgente. Maestri! In RESURRECTION MAN ci sono i Lamb Of God che non ti aspetti! Anche il Doom! Ma questo non sembra essere assolutamente un riempitivo.. i nostri riescono a tirare fuori una prestazione notevole anche in un terreno (o campo di battaglia) che solo apparentemente non sembrava essere loro. POISON DREAM contiene sonorità sia heavy metal che New Metal (da menzionare è la partecipazione di James Jasta degli Hatebreed), forse questo il punto meno alto dell’intero album.
ROUTES è invece un manifesto thrash dove la performance di Chuck Billy dei Testament riesce (ovviamente) a dare ancora qualcosa in più. I tre minuti scorrono velocemente e l’headbanging è d’obbligo già al primo ascolto! BLOODSHOT EYES (pezzo ancora quasi new metal) e ON THE HOOK (ancora maledettamente thrash) chiudono un album ispirato con una produzione eccelsa e che ci rassicura sul fatto che anche senza Chris Adler l’Agnello di Dio abbia davanti a se un futuro più che roseo!
