Among the underground bands and the fans, Cirith Ungol has always meant “cult” and “epic metal”. I personally have not considered them too much (bad mistake!) based also on the fact that the band practically disappeared since 1992, but with great pleasure I managed to discover them with this Forever Black. Despite this absence, due mainly to low commercial revenue, this comeback after 30 years shows a band that has a lot to teach and surely does not provides reasons for their underestimation along the years.
THE CALL is the intro of the album, horns of chaos are calling for the gathering of the Legions that “long have slumbered but now are awake” as LEGIONS ARISE reminds us about Cirith Ungol themselves. Song is a heavy/epic manifesto of their comeback, inciting to the battle, with powerful guitars riding patterns and solos that surround the scratchy and screaming voice of Tim Baker (since 1976!). THE FROST MONSTREME is a pounding epic song inspired by the homonym novel by the American fantasy writer Fritz Reuter. The great guitar work is supported by an inspired bass/drums section.
More hard rock/heavy oriented the following THE FIRE DIVINE, even in the chorus that proves to be more inspired and articulated than in the other songs. STORMBRINGER lead us in the world of the albino emperor Elric of Melniboné, source of inspiration for Cirith Ungol (amazing covers’ artworks) as well as of every known epic metal band in the planet. And just this is the song that made me repent to have “missed” this band until now. Track is pure Epic; initial guitar arpeggios and riffs are creating an incredible atmosphere that throws directly in the battle. The cries in the chorus are a majestic exhortation to the power of the Sword like none before. Melodic solo together with the whole song patterns show the great skills of the two axemen Greg Lindstrom and Jim Barraza. FRACTUS PROMISSUM (from Latin: broken promise) brings again on more heavy territories noticeably in the riffs and the whole structure of the song. NIGHTMARE is a more typical doom/epic song with heavy and pounding refrains drawing attention to the wicked singing perfectly integrated in the track where the guitars work is always in great evidence. This with Stormbringer are, personally speaking, the best songs of the album.
BEFORE TOMORROW and FOREVER BLACK are smashing also hard keeping the level of the album to an incredible high standard with a mix of doom/heavy/epic that has no precedent and proves the pure skills and the incredible songwriting of the band. Cirith Ungol are maybe not the creators of the genre but for sure are its noticeable spokespeople and godfathers and it is really a pity to have lost those 30 years without enjoying their majesty.

Tra tutte le bands dell’underground e tra gli appassionati, il nome Cirith Ungol ha sempre significato “culto” ed “epic metal”. Da me personalmente sempre poco considerati (male, malissimo!) anche per il fatto che la band fosse praticamente sparita dal 1992, con grande piacere ho avuto modo di scoprirli nell’ascolto di questo Forever Black. Nonostante l’assenza, dovuta principalmente ad uno scarso successo commerciale, questo ritorno dopo 30 anni mostra una band che ha tantissimo da insegnare e di certo non spiega i motivi per l’essere stati così pesantemente sottovalutati per tutti questi anni.
THE CALL è l’intro dell’album, i corni del caos richiamano all’adunanza le Legioni che “sono state assopite per lungo tempo ma ora sono deste” come ci ricorda LEGION ARISE sugli stessi Cirith Ungol. La canzone è il manifesto heavy/epic del loro ritorno e, mentre incita alla battaglia, potenti assoli e cavalcate di chitarra circondano la voce graffiante e urlante di Tim Baker (membro dal 1976!). THE FROST MONSTREME è una cadenzata canzone in pieno stile epic ispirata dall’omonimo romanzo dello scrittore fantasy americano Fritz Reuter. Il grande lavoro delle chitarre è supportato da una ispiratissima sezione ritmica basso/batteria.
La seguente THE FIRE DIVINE è più orientata ad uno stile hard rock/heavy, particolarmente nel ritornello che dimostra essere ispirato ed articolato più che in altre canzoni. STORMBRINGER ci porta nel mondo dell’imperatore albino Elric di Melniboné, fonte di ispirazione per i Cirith Ungol (bellissime le cover degli album) e di ogni altra epic metal band conosciuta sulla faccia della terra. Ed è proprio questa canzone ad avermi fatto pentire di aver “perso” questa incredibile band fino ad oggi. La traccia è puro Epic; gli arpeggi iniziali di chitarra ed i successivi riff creano una maestosa atmosfera che scaglia diretti nel cuore della battaglia. Le urla del ritornello sono una potente invocazione del potere della Spada che non ha eguali altrove. L’assolo melodico insieme alla struttura tutta della canzone mostrano la bravura dei due chitarristi Greg Lindstrom e Jim Barraza. FRACTUS PROMISSUM (dal Latino: promessa rotta) ci porta nuovamente su terreni più Heavy scanditi dai riff e dall’impostazione generale. NIGHTMARE è una più tipica canzone doom/epic con ritornelli heavy e cadenzati che spingono l’attenzione sul malvagio cantato perfettamente integrato nella traccia insieme al lavoro delle chitarre sempre in grande evidenza. Questa e Stormbringer sono, a parere personale, le migliori canzoni dell’album.
Anche le ultime BEFORE TOMORROW e FOREVER BLACK colpiscono duro e mantengono il livello dell’album su standard incredibilmente alti, in cui il mix di doom/heavy/epic non ha precedenti e dimostra la grande abilità compositiva ed esecutiva di tutti i musicisti. I Cirith Ungol non saranno i creatori del genere ma ne sono certamente notevoli portavoce e padrini ed è davvero un peccato aver perso questi 30 anni senza poter godere della loro grandiosità.
