At the stroke of the tenth year of life it has been (re)printed in LP format the first (and currently only) album of the WOGUE project, created by Steve Sylvester, released in 2010 only in CD and in our opinion too early forgotten just a few months after its publication. We remember well how its birth had already been troubled: band was forced to change the original moniker of the band "Opus Dei" only a few hours before the release, opting for a more cryptic, but essentially identical, W.O.G.U.E. (Work Of God United Entertainment) due to vehement protests by the well-known religious association, by compelling the band to postpone the release of the album by some months with different graphics and logos.
Among all Steve Sylvester’s creatures, this is the one that moves further away from the classical Death SS sound to express the passion that the artist has always nurtured towards the dark wave of the 70s and partly also towards the industrial sound of the 90s. The "Necromancer of Rock" is befriended in this journey by first-class musicians such as bassist JJM Masini (the project was born from a meeting between Steve and JJ himself), already known in the Florentine and Tuscan scene for having played in bands such as Soul Hunter and in the most recent Susy likes Nutella; Freddy Delirio on keyboards (part of Death SS for more than a decade and mastermind of Freddy Delirio & The Phantoms), Gerardo "Ghez" Monti (also in the role of sound engineer) on guitar and Lorenzo "Carranza" Calonaci on drums.
The LP, produced in a particularly luxurious packaging, contains authentic gems of the dark genre such as BLEEDING, MESMERIZED and WHERE LOVE HAS GONE where Steve's singing is hypnotic as always but also warm and persuasive in a way never heard before. In all the tracks there are captivating refrains that possess the merit of creating intense atmospheres. The lyrics are objectively far from those in the other Steve's creations and deal with topics such as love, hate and in general topics closer to moments of everyday life.
SHOCK ME is one of the highest peaks of the album, Steve's voice first on lower and then on higher tones mixes with effective guitar solos and darker and more passionate atmospheres while in HOLD ME, TOUCH ME, HEAL ME the vampire's performance is literally thrilling and particularly biting. FALLING INTO YOU has a more rock n 'roll oriented, dark and almost obsessive rhythm where Freddy's amazing work on keyboards also really stands out.
MY GODDESS is an excellent example of alternative/rock with truly captivating arrangements and a sound that, while harking back to similar influences already mentioned, results even more innovative. DESPERATION is one of the highest peaks of this album, with an opening industrial style that results in a truly original mix of Heavy/Industrial/Doom with darker guitar tones supported by excellent keyboard arrangements. Its relative length (7 minutes) does not affect at all the listening which remains fluid and mesmerizing. With LIAR and OUT OF TIME, an ideal trinity of industrial sound is then completed.
Another track to keep in great consideration is the final SOMETIMES where dark influences reach their peak (they actually remind me the best Type o' Negative) with a sound between the 70s and the 80s and where the crystalline class of Steve and of the other musicians is creating a captivating, melancholy and mysterious melody ...
In the end, this reissue of W.O.G.U.E. in vinyl format must be an opportunity to rediscover this opera that cannot and must not be forgotten. Steve has got the merit of having made us part of his passion for the darkest face of Rock and through his charisma and his culture to have made this trip unforgettable.

Allo scoccare del decimo anno di vita è stato (ri)stampato, nel solo formato in vinile, il primo (ed unico al momento) album del progetto W.O.G.U.E., creato da Steve Sylvester ed uscito nel lontano 2010 in formato CD ed a mio parere dimenticato troppo in fretta già pochi mesi dopo la sua pubblicazione. Ben ricordiamo come già la sua nascita fosse stata travagliata: la band fu costretta a modificare il moniker originale della band “Opus Dei” solo a poche ore dalla release, optando per un più criptico ma in sostanza identico W.O.G.U.E. (Work Of God United Entertainment), a causa di veementi proteste da parte della nota associazione religiosa costringendo la band a posticipare di qualche mese la stessa uscita dell’album con grafica e logo differenti.
Tra tutte le creature di Steve Sylvester questa è quella che più si allontana dal sound classico alla Death SS per dare sfogo alla passione che l’artista ha sempre nutrito verso la dark wave degli anni 70 ed in parte anche nell’industrial degli anni 90. Il “Negromante del Rock” viene accompagnato in questo viaggio da notevoli musicisti come il bassista JJM Masini (il progetto è nato da un incontro tra Steve e lo stesso JJ), già noto nella scena fiorentina e toscana per aver militato in band come Soul Hunter e nei più recenti Susy likes Nutella, Freddy Delirio alle tastiere (nei Death SS da ormai più di un decennio e mente dei Freddy Delirio & The Phantoms), Gerardo “Ghez” Monti (anche Sound Engineer) alla chitarra e Lorenzo “Carranza” Calonaci alla batteria.
L’LP, presentato in una veste particolarmente lussuosa, contiene delle autentiche gemme del genere dark come BLEEDING, MESMERIZED e WHERE LOVE HAS GONE dove il cantato di Steve è ipnotico come sempre ma anche caldo e suadente in una maniera mai ascoltata in precedenza. In tutte le tracce sono presenti dei refrain accattivanti che hanno il merito di creare atmosfere particolarmente intense. I testi sono oggettivamente molto lontani da quelli presenti nelle altre opere create da Steve e trattano argomenti quali amore, odio ed in generale argomenti più vicini a frangenti di vita quotidiana.
SHOCK ME è uno dei punti più alti dell’intero lavoro, la voce di Steve prima su tonalità più basse e poi più alte si mischia ad assoli di chitarra disturbanti e ad atmosfere sempre dark e coinvolgenti mentre in HOLD ME, TOUCH ME, HEAL ME la performance del vampiro è letteralmente da brividi e particolarmente graffiante. FALLING INTO YOU ha un ritmo più rock n’ roll, oscuro, quasi ossessivo dove spicca anche il pregevole lavoro di Freddy alle tastiere.
MY GODDESS rappresenta un ottimo esempio di alternative/rock con arrangiamenti davvero accattivanti ed un sound che, pur rifacendosi a influenze simili al resto dell’album, risulta ancora più moderno. DESPERATION è uno dei punti più alti dell’album, con un incipit industrial che sfocia in un mix di Heavy/Industrial/Doom davvero originale con tinte di chitarra molto fosche supportate dagli ottimi arrangiamenti di tastiera. La sua relativa lunghezza (7 minuti) non intacca assolutamente l’ascolto che rimane scorrevole e mesmerizzante. Con LIAR e OUT OF TIME si compone una ideale trinità legata all’industrial sound.
Altra traccia da tramandare ai posteri è la conclusiva SOMETIMES dove le influenze dark raggiungono l’apice (personalmente tiro in ballo anche i migliori Type o’ negative) ponendosi su un sound a cavallo tra i ’70 e gli ‘80 e dove la classe cristallina di Steve e dei suoi viene messa al servizio di una melodia accattivante, malinconica, tenebrosa…
In definitiva la ristampa in vinile di W.O.G.U.E. deve essere l’occasione per riscoprire questo lavoro che non può e non deve essere dimenticato. Steve ha il merito di averci reso partecipi della sua passione per la faccia più dark del rock ed attraverso il suo carisma e la sua cultura di aver reso questo viaggio indimenticabile.
