Horror music in Italy has always had fertile ground, starting from to the presence of Death SS (true pioneers and founders of the genre) coming to most recent very valid bands. Over the last few years, thanks to the excellent "Black Stains” from 2018 and the brand new full-length “Broken Time”, Damnation Gallery are musically taking the concept of horror to extremes boundaries through a more immediate and violent approach that includes Thrash, Death and Black metal elements creating truly disturbing atmospheres. The line-up is made up of pure talented musicians such as Scarlet on vocals, Lord Edgar and Lord of Plague on guitars, Low on bass and Coroner behind the drums.
The incipit of "Broken Time" is also the first and enthralling single EDGE OF A BROKEN TIME, in which the biting and evocative voice of Scarlet stands out, capable of introducing and accompanying the different and sudden changes of rhythm that are musically very suggestive. In HUNTING NIGHT the work of the guitars is robust, powerful and the horrifying atmospheres become more and more pressing while in NBAYA an intro of rare rituality leaves room for a sound first Death and then Thrash in which the technical skills of the entire band are shining.
ECLIPSE OF MIND and INFERNO have nothing to envy to the greatest pieces of the giants death-thrash-black and are also anchored on the lessons taught by Italian masters such as the Necrodeath from Genova. Lessons that are well assimilated and re-arranged in a completely original, personal and brilliant way by Damnation Gallery. THE UNNAMED is the most articulated, ambitious, complex and fascinating track of the whole work. Scarlet's performance is again incredible and her voice, interchanging with that of Steve Sylvester (luxury guest and author of a thrilling performance) reminds of filthian memories. Worth of mentioning is also the work of Lord of Plague and Lord Edgar that in the central part of the song should be proud of creating an epic, melancholy and gothic atmosphere.
ANGOSCIA is the only piece entirely sung in Italian in which the band traverses more doom paths, still achieving excellent results. The album closes with WHITE LINES, characterized by an almost punk speed of execution and with ICEBERG, a 7-minutes suite that collects all the qualities and peculiarities described so far about the band.
The new work by Damnation Gallery is striking hard for its compositional and executive quality and for the immense charge it releases in every note. It is surely not a pure “discovery” because the conditions for doing well were already there, but here we can undoubtedly say that we are facing a real masterpiece.

Broken Time is a great album, born from the wise and capable mind of Damnation Gallery and which brings together truly thrilling inspirations, experiments and innovations. The opener, and first single of the work, EDGE OF A BROKEN TIME is a sudden declaration of intents and it shows a high level songwriting, being able to amalgamate various genres, including Power / Doom influences, within the evocative Black / Death main plot created by a powerful and never ordinary work of the two guitars. HUNTING NIGHT moves slowly before paving the way to a very innovative and stomping Death metal.
NBAYA is one of my favourite tracks of the album, Scarlet's powerful and versatile voice combined with heavy and pounding riffs creates an immense Death that recalls the old Scandinavian school but is made unique and original by the band's compositive style. Worth to mention the great bass and drums’ work that amazingly accompanies the guitars in bridges and solos. ECLIPSE OF MIND is a very tight piece in which the succession of melodic arrangements with Thrash outbursts create an excellent track to kick some serious asses during live performances.
INFERNO shows heavier Power/Classic Metal influences in the structure of the song and in the guitar solo and introduces another top level piece: THE UNNAMED, a melodic Death song that conveys the class and talent of these guys, supported by the singing of an exceptional maSSter. The incredible interchange, in the middle of the song, between the melodic arrangements, the guitar solo and melodic death, creates one of the best moments of the work, brought to even higher peaks by Scarlet's growl.
ANGOSCIA is a song in Italian!! From the very first listening it can be classified as one of the best pieces of Black metal sung in mother tongue, creating a real sense of anguish accompanied by the biting guitar riffs. "BUIO ... BUIO ... SEMPRE PIU’ BUIO" but the truth is that this album, which is then closed by WHITE LINES and the long piece ICEBERG, shines and dazzles thanks to the creative power, the originality of what is proposed and the great charge it releases in every song. I see in this work a study, a research and a stylistic synthesis of rare workmanship, an alchemy that (not all) bands manage to find in such a short time, but the great compositive strength of the DG combined with their synergy and perseverance is the main reasons for this great work.

L’horror music in Italia ha sempre avuto terreno fertile, se non altro per la presenza dei Death SS (veri pionieri e fondatori del genere) ed a seguire di altre validissime bands, ma nel corso degli ultimi anni grazie all’ottimo “Black Stains” del 2018 ed al nuovissimo full-lenght “Broken Time”, i Damnation Gallery stanno musicalmente estremizzando il concetto di horror attraverso un approccio più immediato e violento con l'introduzione di elementi Thrash, Death e Black metal dalle atmosfere realmente inquietanti. La line up è composta da musicisti di puro talento quali Scarlet alla voce, Lord Edgar e Lord of Plague alle chitarre, Low al basso e Coroner dietro le pelli.
L’incipit di “Broken Time” è anche il primo e trascinante singolo EDGE OF A BROKEN TIME, in cui spicca la graffiante ed evocativa voce di Scarlet, capace di introdurre e accompagnare i diversi e repentini cambi di ritmo musicalmente molto suggestivi. In HUNTING NIGHT l’operato delle chitarre è robusto, possente e le atmosfere orrorifiche si fanno sempre più pressanti mentre in NBAYA un’intro di rara ritualità lascia spazio ad un sound prima death e poi thrash in cui le capacità tecniche dell’intera band vengono messe in risalto.
ECLIPSE OF MIND e INFERNO non hanno nulla da invidiare ai più grandi successi dei giganti del death-thrash-black mondiale e si fondano anche sulle lezioni impartite dai maestri italici quali i genovesi Necrodeath, ma queste lezioni vengono assimilate e riutilizzate in modo del tutto originale, personale e geniale dai DG. THE UNNAMED è la traccia più articolata, ambiziosa, complessa e affascinante dell’intero lavoro. La prova di Scarlet è ancora da applausi e la sua voce a tratti di filthiana memoria si alterna a quella di Steve Sylvester ospite di lusso e autore di una performance da brividi. Da menzionare anche il lavoro di Lord of Plague e Lord Edgar che nella parte centrale hanno il merito di creare un’atmosfera epica, malinconica e gotica.
ANGOSCIA è l’unico pezzo cantato interamente in italiano in cui la band percorre sentieri più doom raggiungendo ancora risultati eccellenti. L’album si conclude con WHITE LINES caratterizzata da una velocità d’esecuzione quasi punk e con ICEBERG, suite di circa 7 minuti che raccoglie tutte le qualità e peculiarità fin qui raccontate sui Damnation.
La nuova opera dei Damnation Gallery colpisce per la qualità compositiva, esecutiva e per l’immensa carica che sprigiona in ogni sua nota. Non si può parlare di rivelazione perché i presupposti per fare bene c’erano tutti ma in questa sede possiamo tranquillamente affermare di trovarci di fronte ad un capolavoro del genere.

Broken Time è un grande album, partorito dalla sapiente e capace mente dei Damnation Gallery e che riunisce al suo interno ispirazioni, sperimentazioni ed innovazioni davvero da brividi. L’opener nonché primo singolo dell’album EDGE OF A BROKEN TIME è subito una dichiarazione di intenti e mostra un songwriting di alto livello nel riuscire ad amalgamare vari generi, tra cui sonorità Power/Doom, all’interno dell’evocativo intreccio Black/Death creato da un potente e mai banale lavoro delle due chitarre. HUNTING NIGHT incede lentamente prima di aprirsi ad un Death molto innovativo ed incalzante.
NBAYA è uno dei miei pezzi preferiti dell’album, la voce di Scarlet potente e versatile unita ai pesanti e martellanti riff crea un Death che ricorda la scuola scandinava ma viene reso unico ed originale dallo stile della band. Da menzionare il grande lavoro di basso e batteria che accompagna perfettamente le chitarre nei bridge e assolo. ECLIPSE OF MIND è un pezzo tiratissimo in cui alternanze melodiche a sfuriate Thrash creano un ottimo brano per spaccare i culi live.
INFERNO mostra più marcatamente venature Power/Classic Metal nella struttura del brano e nell’assolo di chitarra ed introduce un altro pezzo forte (o fortiSSimo): THE UNNAMED, un brano di Death melodico che rende al meglio la classe ed il talento di questi ragazzi, supportati dal cantato di un MaeSStro di eccezione. Incredibile l’alternanza, a metà del brano, tra parte melodica arpeggiata, assolo di chitarra e death melodico innalzato ad altissime vette dal growl di Scarlet.
ANGOSCIA è un brano in italiano, e già dal primo ascolto si classifica subito come uno dei migliori pezzi Black metal cantati in lingua madre creando un vero senso di angoscia accompagnato dai graffianti riff di chitarra. “BUIO … BUIO … SEMPRE PIU’ BUIO” ma la verità è che questo album, chiuso poi da WHITE LINES e dalla lunga ICEBERG risplende e abbaglia per la potenza creativa, per l’originalità di quanto proposto e per la carica che sprigiona in ogni canzone. Vedo in questo lavoro uno studio, una ricerca ed una sintesi stilistica di rara fattura, alchimia che (non tutte) le bands riescono a trovare in così poco tempo, ma la grande forza dei DG unita al loro grande affiatamento e a tanta perseveranza è anche e soprattutto la ragione di questa grande opera.
