The Last Night of Fall is the second full-length by the Milanese Gothic Metal band False Memories, founded by guitarist Francesco Savino in 2015. The album comes after the previous Chimerical, initially self-released in 2018 and then re-recorded at the end of the same year following the entrance in the line-up of the new singer Rossella Moscatello. Style of this new work is a Gothic Metal, with strong echoes to the most famous overseas and northern European bands, on which Prog and darker echoes are well introduced. The album line-up is completed by Emanuele Cossu (drums), Moreno Palmisano (guitar) and Gianluca Zaffino (bass).
Songs are very intimate both in the lyrics and in the arrangements, Rossella's voice is truly emotional and capable of expressing feelings of deep anguish and strength at the same time, effectively supported by the keyboards that emphasize the highly melancholy and ethereal character of the songs. Throughout the entire disc, the excellent guitar songwriting is particularly noticeable, with energetic old-school riffs spaced out with more melodic moments to create an ensemble capable of flowing easily without being boring or repetitive.
As anticipated, the structure of the songs alternates stronger and more rhythmic moments with more intimate ones, this is particularly evident in the first tracks, including RAIN OF SOULS, in which guitarworking is the first protagonist and remains always in great evidence. In VOICES, the first single, Rossella's splendid voice becomes higher and more intense, surrounded by a heavy riffing with touches of Doom. Really exquisite. HYSTERIA and THE ILLUSIONIST proceed in the same path, showing an even more Gothic-oriented soul and rhythmic and dark riffs.
ERASED gets closer to US productions with Rossella's voice standing out clean and melodious. WHITE CROWS starts very well with dark tones, then changes suddenly and results perhaps among the least attractive (but certainly also the most complex) pieces of the lot. Among the songs of the second part of the work, SEA OF NOTHINGNESS is one of the most interesting. Keyboards are more visible, creating Prog references and alternating well also with the acoustic guitar. Probably the song that best summarizes False Memories’ style. DON'T FORGET closes the album, a track where the excellent mix of guitars and bass is much evident even in the final combination where instruments, keyboards and vocals blend perfectly.
I have been positively impressed by The Last Night of Fall in terms of production, of the band’s skills and for Rossella’s excellent performance, really at ease and enthralling. A very good album with various songs in which, however, in my opinion, there are no tracks that can be defined as classics, which stand out above the others. I have no doubt that the next job will leave everyone speechless!

The Last Night of Fall è il secondo full-length della Gothic Metal band milanese False Memories, fondata dal chitarrista Francesco Savino nel 2015. L’album segue il precedente Chimerical, inizialmente auto pubblicato nel 2018 e poi ri-registrato sul finire dello stesso anno a seguito dell’ingresso in formazione della nuova cantante Rossella Moscatello. Lo stile del nuovo lavoro è un Gothic Metal, dal forte richiamo alle più blasonate bands d’oltreoceano e nordeuropee, su cui sono innestati echi Prog e più oscuri. La line-up dell’album è completata da Emanuele Cossu (batteria), Moreno Palmisano (chitarra) e da Gianluca Zaffino (basso).
Le canzoni sono molto intimiste sia nei testi che negli arrangiamenti, la voce di Rossella è davvero emozionale e capace di esprimere sensazioni ora di potenza ora di profonda angoscia, supportata efficacemente dalle tastiere che accentuano il carattere fortemente malinconico ed etereo dei brani. Attraverso l’intero disco risulta particolarmente evidente l’ottimo songwriting delle chitarre, con riff energici old-school intervallati da momenti più melodici a creare un insieme capace di scorrere via veloce senza risultare noioso o ripetitivo.
Come anticipato, la struttura dei brani alterna momenti più forti e cadenzati con altri più intimisti, questo è particolarmente evidente nelle prime tracce, tra cui RAIN OF SOULS, in cui il guitarworking è subito protagonista ed in grande evidenza. In VOICES, primo singolo, la splendida voce di Rossella si fa più alta ed intensa, supportata da un riffing pesante con venature a tratti Doom. Davvero pregevole. HYSTERIA e THE ILLUSIONIST continuano sulla scia tracciata mostrando un’anima ancora più Gothic-oriented e riff cadenzati e oscuri.
ERASED si avvicina maggiormente alle produzioni statunitensi con la voce di Rossella che svetta pulita e melodiosa. WHITE CROWS inizia molto bene con toni davvero oscuri cambiando poi repentinamente e risultando forse tra i pezzi meno appetibili (ma sicuramente anche più articolati) del lotto. Tra i brani della seconda parte del disco risulta interessante SEA OF NOTHINGNESS dove le tastiere sono in maggiore evidenza creando maggiori richiami Prog ed alternandosi efficacemente anche con la chitarra acustica. Probabilmente la canzone che meglio sintetizza lo stile dei False Memories. Chiude l’album DON’T FORGET, dove resta ancora evidente l’ottimo lavoro di chitarre e basso nell’amalgama finale dove strumenti, tastiere e voce si fondono alla perfezione.
The Last Night of Fall mi ha lasciato un’ottima impressione per quanto riguarda la cura con cui è stato prodotto, per la capacità tecnica della band e per l’ottima prestazione di Rossella, davvero a suo agio e trascinante. Un album decisamente buono e con canzoni varie in cui però, a parer mio, mancano delle tracce che possano essere definite dei classici, che spicchino sulle altre. Non ho dubbi che il prossimo lavoro lascerà tutti a bocca aperta!
