Sulphur Cvlt is the first full-length by the Italian Drown In Sulphur, a band that in the period immediately before the covid carried out a full upheaval of the line-up through the entry of the new three quarters of the formation. Alongside the two new guitarists Emanuele Corso (Dimitryux), bringer of greater heaviness and modernity to the sound and Chris Lombardo, capable of giving a more emphasized black metal imprint, is the frontman Luca Pareschi as vocalist who, through his creative talent helps to take the transformed musical concept of the band even further. The new elements join the historic and talented drummer Domenico Tamilia completing the new and wicked incarnation of Drown In Sulphur.
The revived band's sound is something that in my opinion has no equal in Italy yet, the Blackened Deathcore (if we want to classify it this way) on which the sound wall is based is truly inspired and well conveys the lyrical concept that has as its fulcrum the story of the characteristics of some demonic entities belonging to biblical tradition and others of Lovecraftian memory. The first track of "Sulphur Cvlt" is the first single ESSENCE, a song that immediately makes clear the band's intentions with a darker and heavier sound compared to the past and that, with new technology and modernity, tributes the Black Metal darkness through a melody that, also thanks to the aggressive growl singing, remains memorable since the first listening.
Melody and aggressiveness are mixed through the presence of powerful breakdowns in the following DESCENDENT SUNRISE and BLESSED END, songs composed with the professionalism and technical skills of veterans and where the rhythm changes are exciting and sudden. VIVANT TENEBRAE is in my opinion an incredible track, the almost machine-gun speed of the beginning is softened by a breakdown and a melody that would be the envy of many more noble Black bands, while the evocative singing acts as the tip of the iceberg to an impressive work of guitars and drums. THE CRAWLING CHAOS agitates with its initial keyboards and then shakes the listener through majestic guitar riffs and heavy drumming and it shows a main refrain perfectly written. AS ABOVE SO BELOW is a piece that impresses for its violent and precise moments and for the final part where a literally thrilling melodic line is still the protagonist (listen to believe!).
THE SLEEPING ABOMINATION is occasionally an almost Death Metal track proving the versatility and technical skill of the combo. Everything then merges with more Black and Deathcore moods creating an explosive mix. Let's now move to Sulphur Cvlt's masterpiece that is its title track! An incredible piece with a melody that makes you hail as a miracle knowing that it's written by guys who are just over 20 years old (perhaps in their room after schoolworks) and that makes the song a real hit. Peremptory rhythm changes characterize the rest of the piece that enchants for complexity and simplicity at the same time (try to hear from minute 2:20 till the end).
Album ends with EVERYTHING HAS BEEN READ which features an almost Arabic and very intense arpeggio that supports the structure of the entire song which is still very varied and well structured. "Sulphur Cvlt" is an album worth to be listened to while Drown In Sulphur are a new band light years away from what they were until a few years ago and that with renewed vigor and musical offer deserves to make its own way into the current metal scene, not only in Italy. We like to remind that album is self-produced, mixed and mastered at the Zeta Factory Studios and that soon after its publication and presentation in an intimate release party, in which we had the pleasure of participating, it reached hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify. We as FoS hope that the hunt for this new infernal creature by the most famous record companies will soon be open.

Sulphur Cvlt è il primo full-lenght degli italianissimi Drown In Sulphur, band che nel periodo immediatamente prima del covid ha messo in atto un vero e proprio stravolgimento di line-up attraverso l'ingresso dei nuovi tre quarti della formazione. A fianco dei due nuovi chitarristi Emanuele Corso (Dimitryux), creativo idealizzatore di maggiore pesantezza e modernità al sound e Chris Lombardo, capace di dare una più accentuata impronta black metal, troviamo il frontman Luca Pareschi alla voce che, attraverso il suo talento contribuisce ad estremizzare ancora di più il trasformato concetto musicale della band. I nuovi elementi si aggiungono allo storico e talentuoso drummer Domenico Tamilia completando così la nuova e maligna incarnazione dei Drown In Sulphur.
Il rinato sound della band è qualcosa che a mio parere in Italia non ha ancora eguali, il Blackened Deathcore (se cosi vogliamo classificarlo) su cui si fonda il muro sonoro è veramente inspirato e bene rende il concept lirico che ha come fulcro il racconto delle caratteristiche di alcune entità demoniache appartenenti ad ambienti biblici e ad altri di lovecraftiana memoria. La prima traccia di “Sulphur Cvlt” coincide con il primo singolo ESSENCE, brano che mette sin da subito in chiaro le intenzioni della band con un suono più oscuro e pesante rispetto al passato e che con nuova tecnologia e modernità tributa l’oscurità Black Metal attraverso una melodia che, anche grazie all’aggressivo cantato growl, rimane memorizzabile sin da subito.
Melodia ed aggressività si mischiano attraverso la presenza di importanti breakdown nelle successive DESCENDENT SUNRISE e BLESSED END, brani composti con una professionalità e capacità tecnica da veterani e dove i cambi di ritmo sono rocamboleschi e improvvisi. VIVANT TENEBRAE è una traccia a mio modo di vedere incredibile, la velocità quasi da mitragliatrice dei primi secondi viene smorzata da un breakdown e da una melodia che farebbe invidia a tante più blasonate band Black, mentre l’evocativo cantato fa da punta dell'iceberg ad un lavoro impressionate delle chitarre e della batteria. THE CRAWLING CHAOS inquieta con le sue tastiere iniziali per poi scuotere l’ascoltatore attraverso dei riff di chitarra maestosi e un drumming pesantissimo e presenta un refrain principale scritto in maniera perfetta. AS ABOVE SO BELOW è un pezzo che impressiona per i suoi momenti violenti quanto precisi e per la parte finale dove è ancora protagonista una linea melodica letteralmente da brividi (sentire per credere!).
THE SLEEPING ABOMINATION è a tratti una traccia quasi Death Metal a dimostrazione della versatilità e della bravura tecnica del combo. Il tutto si mischia poi ad aspetti più Black e Deathcore creando un mix esplosivo. Passiamo adesso al capolavoro di “Sulphur Cvlt” ovvero la sua title track! Un pezzo incredibile dotato di una melodia che fa gridare al miracolo dato che è scritta da ragazzi che hanno poco di più 20 anni (magari nella propria stanza dopo gli impegni scolastici) e che rende il brano una vera hit. Perentori cambi di ritmo caratterizzano il resto del pezzo che incanta per complessità e semplicità allo stesso momento (provate a sentire dal minuto 2:20 alla fine del brano).
L’album si chiude con EVERYTHING HAS BEEN READ che ha come caratteristica un arpeggio quasi arabeggiante e molto intenso che sorregge la struttura dell’intero brano ancora molto varia e ben strutturata. “Sulphur Cvlt” è un album che merita di essere ascoltato mentre i Drown In Sulphur sono una nuova band distante anni luce da quello che erano sino a qualche anno fa e che con rinnovato vigore e con una rinnovata proposta musicale merita di farsi strada all’interno della scena metal attuale, e non solo italiana. Ricordiamo che l’album è autoprodotto, mixato e masterizzato presso gli Zeta Factory Studio e che nei pochi giorni successivi alla pubblicazione e presentazione in un intimo release party a cui abbiamo avuto il piacere di partecipare ha raggiunto centinaia di migliaia di streams su Spotify. Auspichiamo come FoS che si apra presto la caccia a questa nuova creatura infernale da parte delle più blasonate case discografiche.
